That's awful!!! Haven't you got an insurance for that type of things?? I know my bank has, as when I got my debit card I specified it was for buying stuff on the web....

Oh, absolutely. I withdrew some cash and called the bank representative back, told her exactly how much I'd taken out, and told her to turn off the card. She's filing a fraud claim, and I will get the money credited back. I feel pretty secure in how the bank is handling it.

It's the principle of the thing. I'm just seriously peeved.

A guy hacked into my borhter's Ebay account a couple of months ago... to sell bicycles... It was really weird. But this is plain annoying, I can see that.

{{{{hugs}}}} we had that happen. They ordered tons of weird stuff and it was a hassle but no financial loss in the end. Glad you caught it quickly.

How about a cash advance on the credit card for a down payment? A bank should do that for you while this is getting sorted.

I have little experience when it comes to renting, having been a student until recently. I rented a house my last year of college, and they required a check with the down payment...I just assumed renting was like that -- you couldn't use a credit card to secure a down payment.

Am I incorrect?

I've never been able to put a deposit on credit, but I think she meant that maybe your bank could loan you the money, or you could take it as a cash advance off of a credit card.

Can't use the card but the bank can do a cash advance on the card and you can give the landlord the cash. I'd check with the bank.

That is scary!
Happened to a friend of mine, some waiter in a restaurant in Italy copied her CC details and used it to buy $2500 worth of stuff in Milan. While she was back here in New Zealand.

You're lucky it was 'only' $250 but it sucks for the job/apartment hunting..

Debit cards are the #1 culprit in theft and identity theft. You'd be better off using cash, checks and credit cards.
