It's actually better to get OUT of bed when you can't sleep. The longer you lie there awake/tossing and turning, the more you are associating BED with NO SLEEP.
So when I find myself too restless to sleep, I get up and read for 15-30min, and that usually (not always) does the trick. It's also a good idea to never read or study in bed, for the same reason.
