Chapter Six
“What are we doing here?” Yuri asked Ryutaro as they traversed the hospital corridors. He was carefully balancing the basket of fruit that Ryutaro has asked, no, ordered, him to bring.
Ryutaro gave out a hurried huff. “Yuya, that heartless bastard, he hadn’t got the time to check his own freaking wife from the hospital, so he asked me to do it myself.” They stopped in front of Sayuri’s room.
“Saite~” Yuri cursed under his breath as he slung the basket over one arm. “I’m going to go and tell Sayuri-oneechan exactly what I think her husband is.” He made a move to enter the room, his hand on the doorknob.
Ryutaro snatched his hand away. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing, Chii?”
“What? I want Sayuri-oneechan to think that her husband doesn’t care for her.” Chinen said defensively. “That way, she’ll know what to do. She can even get out of this sham she’s calling a marriage! I’m doing her a favour.”
“For someone so smart, I can’t believe you could be this clueless, Chii,” Ryuu sighed.
“Well then, explain whatever is wrong with my earlier decision is to me in a few words!” Chinen said, bottom lip pushed out and looking like the spoiled kid that he has always seemed to them.
“Sayuri-chan’s pregnancy is a dangerous one. If you do tell her that her husband doesn’t love her, or isn’t even trying to love her, or just doesn’t care about her the way she has tried to convince herself, don’t you think it’s going to spell trouble for both herself and their kid? Dude, think!” Ryutaro hissed, willing his voice to be soft.
Chinen’s eyes widened. “Her pregnancy’s… a dangerous one?”
“Yes. That’s what the doctor told Takaki, and that’s what Takaki told me. So, hush-hush, okay?” Ryutaro asked, a finger on his lips, eyes pleading for Chinen to hear him out.
Chinen sighed and shrugged, his hand pushing the door open. “Okay, fine.”
---
Sayuri heard everything. She heard everything that has been said between the two guys behind the door. She knew it. She has always known that she meant almost nothing to Takaki Yuya - just someone that he had to take care of because he has gotten her knocked up. There was nothing more from the start, so why was she still wishing for something more?
She felt the tears run down her cheeks and she lowered her head to wipe them away. While doing so, the door opened and Chinen and Ryutaro entered the room.
“Are~? Oneechan!” Yuri said as he rushed to Sayuri’s bedside. Then he put a hand on the girl’s shoulder. “Sayuri-oneechan… daijoubu? Do you want me to call a nurse? Is there anything wrong?”
Sayuri smiled through her tears, giggling lightly. Knowing that it would upset both boys if they knew that she has overheard them talking about her and their friend’s marriage. Even if there was hardly anything true in this marriage, Sayuri was sure that she could find true friends among his friends, and, Sayuri being Sayuri, she was aiming to please. “I’m fine, Chinen-kun. Pregnant women like me suffer from hormonal imbalances that render us too emotional at times.”
Chinen nodded seriously. Then he sat on Sayuri’s bedside. He reached over and ran his fingers through her hair. “We’ll be taking you home now, Sayuri-oneechan.”
“Yuyan couldn’t come right now, he said there has been trouble at work,” Ryutaro lied, but he looked so convincing. Maybe it was the way his eyes looked at her? Those wide, innocent eyes?
“Is that so?” Sayuri said. “Well, it’s fine, I guess. He’s always so busy.”
“From now on, Oneechan, we’ll be here for you, okay?” Chinen said as he beamed.

Takaki was still at the office. He wasn’t usually this spawned with work. After all, he wasn’t the head of their family company yet, and he has too many minions doing the real work for him in the mafia. Maybe he was wanting the work too much to flood him.
He didn’t want to have the free time.
He was in the middle of reading a report from one of his subordinates in the mafia when the door slammed open. The demand that he was forming in his throat died when he found who the person who barged in was.
---
“Yuri called a while ago telling me that if you can’t take care of your wife properly, he’ll force you to divorce her and marry her himself.” Yabu said angrily as he plopped on the couch adjacent Takaki’s table. The other guys who trailed behind him found different places for them to park their bodies onto.
“I thought you were going to stay with her, that’s why I left early - so that the two of you could have your moment,” Daiki groaned. “What the hell man. And I mean what the hell.”
“Seriously, Takaki, I don’t get you.” Inoo said, disappointment written all over his features.
“You don’t even seem to be a married man.” Hikaru moaned despairingly.
“You’re pathetic!” Yabu growled exasperatedly. “Why the hell did you marry her if you’re going to stay like that?”
He sighed as he put down his papers. “Guys, I was just busy. I asked Ryutaro to check Sayuri out as a favour, but if I had the time, you could be rest assured that I would be the one to check her out of the hospital.”
Hikaru sneered. Among the four of Takaki’s best friends, Hikaru was the one person who was closest to Sayuri. “Yeah, right. You never wanted to be married to her in the first place. And why is that? Just because of Haruna-chan.”
Instantly, Takaki’s eyes turned hard. “Hikaru. You are my friend and I know that you mean well, but don’t speak about Haruna like that.”
“Dude. It’s been years. Haven’t you moved on already?” Daiki asked, incredulous. He’s pegged Yuya to be many things, but being this faithful, being this loyal? He never thought Yuya could be like that.
“Ah, the perils of love,” Kei said, but his voice lacked the snarky tone that he always used. Takaki noticed that and clocked in on it. “Inoo-kun. Anything wrong?”
Kei shook his head full of black curls. “Nothing’s wrong. It’s just that… I kind of understand what you’re feeling, Yuu. But don’t you think it’s time to let go? You’re married. She’s married. She’s happy. You’re going to have a baby. You’re going to have what you wanted. Isn’t that reason enough?”
Takaki averted his eyes from the other four pair of eyes which were trained on him. Then he softly shook his head. “No.” he said. “I know I have to, but I can’t. Whatever I tell myself, I just can’t.”
---
Takaki Yuya didn’t like feeling guilty. It made him want to just disappear off the face of the earth. And that was one of the reasons why he didn’t want to go home just yet. He didn’t want to see Sayuri and be reminded that he has been such a cad about her.
But his work was finished earlier than he’s expected, and before he knew it, he was emerging from the car and proceeding to enter the house.
He was about to go upstairs when he heard the clinking of tableware from the kitchen. Curious, he headed for the kitchen and saw Sayuri there, setting the table.
She looked up and saw him there. Upon seeing him, her face broke into a big grin. “Ah~ Okaeri!” she said as she went over and helped him take off his blazer jacket. Yuya let her help him in a daze. She put his briefcase and blazer jacket neatly on a chair as she called for the household butler to bring in the pineapple juice that she has made for him.
When the butler came in with the pitcher, she smiled up at her husband and said, “Drink some up first, I know that you’re tired. It’s pineapple, your favorite, deshou? Dinner will be served in a few,” she said as she sat him down on the chair that was at the head of the table.
Yuya looked at her, blinking hard. Was this really Sayuri? Was this really the woman he married two days ago?
She’s totally a nice girl, Yuya thought. Maybe they are right. Maybe I really ought to give her a chance.
“So… how are you feeling?” Takaki asked after he has shaken himself from his daze. “I’m sorry I couldn’t be there to check you out. I have been busy.”
“I’m feeling well,” she replied as she carefully sat on her chair that was adjacent to Yuya’s. “And it’s fine if you couldn’t do so. I guess it’s really hard, huh? Heading your own organization? My Dad’s the same. He’s not at home most of the time, too.”
Yuya unconsciously smiled at his wife’s chattering. It was comfortable and good-natured that it was impossible to keep the smile off of his face. “Is that so?”
“Ryuu-kun and Chinen-kun brought me home, and they were really friendly, so it was alright,” Sayuri said as she grinned from her side of the table. She looked so childlike, so innocent, so lovely, so much unlike the solemn, crying lady he has had sex with. She was beautiful when she cried, even more so now that she was smiling.
You couldn’t blame him for leaning over and kissing her - deeply, securely - on the mouth.
He hid his blush quite well when he pulled away by saying in his usual charming voice, “Let’s eat?”
It was the spark in her eye and the smile on her lips that made him smile as he reached over for his fork.
---
Later that night, Takaki sat Sayuri down. He had made up his mind to tell her what the doctor had said. He thought that there ought to have been more honesty in their marriage.
There might not be love, but that could grow, like he was constantly reminding himself. As long as he didn’t see Haruna or didn’t hear about her, as long as he stayed absorbed in his wife, he could fall in love with Sayuri. He knew he could do that.
“Tomorrow, we’ll enrol in that prenatal class that the doctor suggested,” he said gently as he hung his belt on a rack. He rolled up his sleeves up to his elbows as he pulled up a chair in front of Sayuri and sat there.
“Tomorrow? But the doctor said I had to rest extensively. At least, that was what Ryuu-kun and Chinen-kun relayed to me,” Sayuri said, her brow wrinkling, and Takaki reached over to brush his fingers on her forehead. Her eyes closed to the touch, and Takaki smiled.
“What Ryutaro told you is right, but I’m going to ensure that you won’t have to get tired. Besides, you’re just two months pregnant, you won’t have to attend until you’re at least six.”
“Is that so?” Sayuri’s wide eyes turned to him. “Why do I have to attend these classes, Yuyan?” His nickname flowed prettily down her tongue; it was fascinating.
Yuya took a deep breath. Now was the time to tell her. “Well… I talked to the doctor… and he said your pregnancy was dangerous. He also said you were allergic to anaesthesia, so we’ll have to do the birth in the natural way, so we’re going to learn things in that class that would help you cope with the pain.”
Sayuri was silent as she digested what Yuya had said. Then she asked, in a small, childlike voice, “It’s going to hurt really badly, huh?”
Yuya felt that she was tensing up, and he put his palms on her cheeks as he gently pushed her face up so that her eyes could meet his. “Sa-chan, look at me.”
Her eyes met his and he smiled. “It would, but I promise I’ll be there, okay? It might hurt, but I’ll not let anything bad happen to you, okay?”
Sayuri sighed. It was a trembly breath, but she smiled and Yuya smiled back. He leaned over to kiss her on the forehead, then he stood up to fetch her a glass of water from their dresser. “The doctor said that you shouldn’t let yourself get dehydrated, so let’s work hard to keep your fluids up, ne?”
Sayuri nodded as she drank up. When she finished, Yuya put the glass back on top of the dresser before tucking her in. Then, as if pulled in by some unseen force, he laid flush against her back, with her head using one of his arms as a pillow, and their hands entwined. He felt her breathing even out, which told him that she was already asleep, and he smiled softly, kissing her gently on the nape, before saying, “Good night, Sa-chan.”
