Chapter Three

Soon, breakfast was over, and Keito stretched. He always did after a good meal, and Kei’s prepared breakfast was an absolute paradise for food lovers like he was.

“Ne, Keito?” it was Yuto.

He turned towards the tall drummer and posed a questioning look. “Nani?”

“Do you have something to do later in the afternoon?” Yuto asked through a mouthful of cheesecake. Though Kei didn’t bake that well (or so the older guy claimed), the cheesecake was absolute heaven, so Keito didn’t blame the younger guy for digging into the food like a starved man. Yuto ate a lot, though how he managed to stay that skinny was beyond Keito.

Keito ran through his schedule in his mind as he considered Yuto’s question. Though it was the fifteenth of December, school still wasn’t out for the Sophia student, and he has Philosophy of Love classes later, along with Business Administration lectures. He also would visit his Mom in her Tokyo apartment, then go to the flat he once shared with his Dad to pick Pablo up. Then after that, he was going back to Sophia to pick up his thesis proposals, see if any of the three were approved. He could be back by four o’ clock if he was going to move in a clockwork pace.
“Hm, I might be back by four-thirty. Why?”

“I’m going Christmas shopping, and I thought I’d ask you to come with me,” Yuto beamed. “Could you? I mean, if you are not that busy.”

“Hmm, I really am not sure,” Keito said. He knew he was going to be dead tired by the time he arrived back in the JUMP House, but Yuto looked so eager that he just had to agree. “Okay then, I’ll ring you up when I’m finished with my errands, okay?”

Yuto brightened up, if he could get any brighter in countenance than he already is. “Arigatou, Keito!”

Keito grinned at the enthusiasm his friend showed. Then he excused himself from the table, avoiding the eyes of the two girls - he gets nervous around girls, especially pretty girls like Tenshii and Yui - but since the two were talking to Tamamori and Hikaru, he was actually glad that they weren’t paying attention to him. He went straight to his room, changed his clothes and pulled on his slingbag, ran down the stairs, bid the other members goodbye, then went straight out the House to the bus stop.

He was about to board the bus when his phone rang. He flipped his phone open and answered it. “Moshi moshi, Keito speaking,” he said.

“Keito? It’s okaasan here.”

“Oh!” he said as he boarded the bus. Then a smile graced his features. He hadn’t been able to talk to his mom much since his career turned on a more positive note, and her voice has been a welcome sound to his ears. “Okaasan! I’m going to visit you later, is that okay?”

“Mochiron desu,” Nishi Katsue told her son. “I was going to ask you about that, Keito, but you beat me to it!” he could hear his mother’s laugh at the other end of the line. “Are you off somewhere today, honey?”

“Un!” Keito replied, feeling like a little kid again. But unlike before, he didn’t mind being childlike right now. Besides, it was his mother he was talking to right now, and his mother would never tease him for being childish. As Katsue put it before, she missed the child Keito had been. “I have two classes in university today.”

“Sou da ne? Ganbare yo, Keito,” his mother said. “I’ll see you later, okay?”

Keito nodded. “Un, okaasan. Ja mata ne!”

“Mata ne,” Katsue’s gentle voice said. “Kiotsukete na?”

“Un, kiotsukete,” he said as he flipped his phone closed and pushed it into his pocket. That same moment his phone rang again. Because he was caught by surprise, he clumsily retrieved his phone from his pocket, and ended having the said phone fall to the bus’ floor.

“Ah, crap,” he whispered to himself as he carefully bent down to retrieve it, but then the bus halted to a stop, making him fall to his butt and the phone streak to the front of the bus.

Out of embarrassment (by then the people inside the bus had recognized him as Keito Okamoto, one of the members of Hey! Say! JUMP, and were now whispering among themselves), he blushed deeply and got up, bowing to the people inside the bud for his clumsiness. He looked around for his phone, and saw that the red gadget has made its way to the driver’s seat.

He was about to reach for the still-ringing phone when someone reached out for it first.

“Uhh… sumimasen, is this yours?”

Keito looked up to see that he one who had picked his phone was a girl. A very pretty girl, if he might add. She was about eighteen years old, with her black hair tucked into a low ponytail, her long bangs fluttering around her delicate heart-shaped face. She had bright eyes hidden by the glasses she wore, and red cheeks, probably due to the season. Even though she might be considered by the other JUMP members, particularly Hikaru, as ‘plain’ and ‘geeky’, to Keito, she was one of the prettiest girls he’s ever seen. Which made his uncanny ability to be unintelligible worse than usual. “Uhh..” he said. “Yeah, that phone’s mine.”

“Here,” the girl said as she handed the phone to Keito. Then with a polite smile, she said to Keito, “Uhh… sumimasen, you’re blocking the way.”

Keito jumped to the side to let the girl and the other bus-riders behind her to pass, knowing that his face was burning red. He was so embarrassed of himself that he just looked down as he took the call. “Hai, moshi-moshi,”

“Keito!” it was Hikaru’s voice that greeted his ear.

“Hikaru-kun? Doushita?” he asked, looking down on his feet, the heat on his cheeks still there. He felt his cheek with his fingers. Yep. Definitely hot.

“Tamamori-kun just confessed to Yui-chan!” someone else’s voice said, and Keito worked out that it was Daiki.

A grin graced the English Prince’s face. He and Yuta weren’t that close, but he sure was glad that someone has got the guts to confess. “Oh?
What happened, then?”

“He and Yui-chan are official now!” it was Kei Inoo’s voice that spoke next.

“Yokatta,” Keito said politely. Honestly, he still wasn’t sure why the other JUMP members, particularly BEST members, phoned him about this, since he wasn’t close with BEST nor with Yuta… honestly is he weren’t such a good-mannered kid (yep, self-praise stinks, but Keito couldn’t find other words to use), he’d outright say “So what?”

“Ne, Keito?” it was Kota’s voice.

And as only JUMP’s leader’s voice could make him straighten up his act, Keito blinked and straightened his posture up, as though the leader would scold him again. “Hai?”

“Do you think you can make it on the twenty-first at seven p.m.?”

Keito mentally ran his schedule in his head. Did he have anything to do on the twenty-first? Besides attend some Philosophy classes? “I have class until five p.m., so I think I’ll probably be good at seven, why?”

“Yosha!” Kota said gleefully. “Then we’ll expect you at the gokon, okay?”

Keito’s eyes widened. No no no no. Manager-san’s rule number one ever since all of BEST turned into adults (at least according to age, because it would be ironic in BEST’s current attitudes), never, and Manager-san meant never, go along with the stuff that they are planning. In pain of being scolded and chastised until you got down on your knees and begged for forgiveness. And Keito being Keito, without thinking to contradict such a merciless statement, kept it in mind to refuse whatever BEST planned.

That, and the fact that he doesn’t have any idea what a gokon is.

“Wait…chotto matte kudasai!” Keito said in a panic. “Wait! What the heck is a gokon?” But there was no reply as the line on the other side went dead. Keito looked down on his phone morosely, then twisted about to put the phone in his bag. Doing so, he caught a glimpse of the girl with the glasses, who was standing like he was, but was gazing at the outside world silently.

Keito thought she was as pretty as a picture right then and there.
