Chapter Three

Yabu Kota sighed as he brought down some files from his briefcase. He still had lots of stuff to do, and his day has barely even started. This was one of the ways to forget, his father once told him. If you want to forget, go work yourself to death.

It was exactly 4:30 in the afternoon when he received the call from Yuya. He was very nearly sleeping because of exhaustion, so he was actually looking forward to a distraction from the other guy, though he makes less sense than the younger guys in their group combined most of the time. He reached over and flipped the phone open.

“Hello?”

[“Yabu! You better come here at Inoo’s Hospital! Quick!”]
“Eh? What happened? I was just messaging with him this morning,” he asked.

[“He had a car accident just now. His car was totally wrecked.”]“WHAT?!!!” Yabu shouted as he stood up. He wasn’t listening anymore at Yuya’s incoherent babbling as he shoved his phone in his pocket and rushed out of the office.

---

The eight boys were scattered in the hallway outside the emergency room, waiting for the doctors to come out. Mr. and Mrs. Inoo were also there, worried about their son. Tears were swimming in Mrs. Inoo’s eyes, and the overall atmosphere was grave and tense.

Yabu arrived, and upon clocking in on the brown hair of the guy who called him a few minutes ago, he ran towards them.

“Auntie, Uncle, what happened?” He asked Kei’s parents.

Mrs. Inoo shook her head.

Mr. Inoo spoke up. “The police said that someone sabotaged the brakes of his car. A 10-wheeler truck that was overspeeding... he couldn’t stop the car in time.” His voice is trembling as he imparted that piece of news to his son’s friends.

Hikaru stared at Mr. Inoo, slack-jawed. His voice was trembling as he said, “Uncle, Auntie… I - I found a man who was circling Kei’s car moments before the accident.”

“Why didn’t you warn Kei about it?” Mr. Inoo demanded at the fox-toothed young man. He stalked towards the younger man, and the other kids had to restrain the Kei’s father from harming their friend.

“I didn’t know…”

Yabu made up his mind in a split-second. “I’ll… I’ll just buy us some coffee. Hikaru, mind coming with me?”

---

“He’s stable now,” the doctor said a few moments after he stepped out of the operating room. “He’ll be okay, but his spine has been badly damaged. It would take a bit of time to heal, but it would definitely do. For the meantime, Kei-san is temporarily blind and paralyzed.”

Yabu let out a sigh of relief he didn’t know he has been holding the past few minutes. Kei’s parents followed the doctor to the room Kei was transferred in after the operation.

“He’ll be fine,” Yuto said.

“Wow. Gee, thanks, for deducing something that we all already know,” Yamada said as he stood up on his seat.

“I thought you loved me, why are you being all sarcastic all of a sudden?” Yuto asked, eyes wide.

Yamada grimaced, and Chinen grinned up at Yuto. “Love combined with Yamada really hurts. I won’t hurt you.”

Daiki blinked at what Chinen said. “Chii, that’s even worse.”

Chinen stuck his tongue out at Daiki.

Yabu unconsciously smiled. After three hours of absolute tension, it was glad to know that his peers could still joke around like this.

“I’ll be late for my flight,” Keito said softly. He looked at Yabu. “Please do inform me about the recent developments concerning Inoo-chan, would you, Yabu-kun?”

“Sure,” Yabu said. “Have a safe flight, man.”

“Yeah.”

The corridor was filled with good-byes and well-wishes for the guy who was going to school abroad. Yabu sank on his chair and tried to breathe.
