Chapter Six:

Elena and her husband were strolling inside the mall to buy a few things for the baby. It was hard work trying to convince Shohei to come with her. But when she said that it was going to do a lot for the sake of appearances, Shohei immediately agreed.

Elena was busy choosing what the best shade of yellow was for a baby sweater when Shohei said, “Sweetheart, would you like something to drink?”

She looked up into Shohei’s face. She was thankful for him --  he knew about her betrayal, but he understood why she had to do that, and accepted her enough to be his wife. Sure, he ahad his fits of temper, but surely, that was normal. Surely, that was alright.

“Sure, thanks, Sho-chan,” she smiled.

Shohei smiled warmly as he bent to kiss his wife on the cheek. Then he moved away to a fruit shake booth.

Elena went back to choosing clothes. She decided on a particular jacket with rainbow buttons when she heard a rustling behind her.
“Elena, right?”

Her eyes widened at the voice she heard. It was a voice that haunted her every waking hour. A voice that has whispered to her loving words once. It was a voice that belonged to the man who has taken her girlhood for the price of her mother’s safety and who was the father of the child in her belly. It was a man, she recalled with dread, who she was not supposed to see again.

“Long time no see, Mizusawa Elena.”

She slowly turned around and blinked her eyes at the tall man who was supposed to be a stranger but was not. She took in the high cheekbones and the shapely lips and the bright eyes and knew that it was the same man.

Her hand immediately flew to her stomach which was barely showing a bump but was fairly noticeable.

“I heard that you’ve married,” he continued.

“I’m sorry, you must have mistaken me for somebody else,” Elena averted her eyes and tried to walk away from Yabu. She wanted to get to Shohei immediately, but Yabu’s hand went to her elbow and pulled her back.

“You’re pregnant, is that baby mine?” Yabu asked again.

“Please, sir, I don’t ever recall coming upon you even once in my life,” Elena said desperately. She didn’t want to cause a scene, so she didn’t call for help. The other guy was manageable, so far.

“So you say you’ve forgotten about me?” the guy said mysteriously.

“No, I - ” but even before she got her full sentence out, Yabu’s mouth was on hers in a fierce, almost breathless kiss. It was one of those kisses that just tasted like desperation and longing - sweet and painful at the same time. Elena was reminded of that one night they spent together and her knees felt weak just at the recollection.

“Did you forget me? ‘Cause I haven’t forgotten about you,” Yabu whispered against her lips.

---

Elena’s body was aching for more than just that. She hasn’t slept with anyone besides this man, and for the past months, she has been aching for his touch. A kiss would not cut it. She needed more.

But her mind protested against her hands reaching up to tangle themselves in his hair. You’re married, her mind screamed. And you aren’t even supposed to be meeting him again!

His fingers tightened on her chin because she has flinched. “Miss Mizusawa, why are you avoiding me?”

“I am not avoiding you. “ she lied. “I don’t even know you, so please leave me alone.”

“I know you know me. I can feel it on your lips,” Yabu said, his eyes searching hers. Elena felt queasy, and though she was way past the terrible stage of pregnancy that was nausea and morning sickness, she felt sick that very moment. She wanted to run and hide from his searching eyes.

“What are you doing?”

Elena felt relief flood her system when Shohei came and rather forcefully grabbed her arm and pulled her away from Yabu. Yabu’s face looked inscrutable.

“Are you her husband?” Yabu asked.

“I am,” Shohei said angrily. “What were you doing to my wife?”

“We were merely talking,” Yabu said easily.

“Do you know him Elena?” Shohei demanded. When Shohei was like this, she found it impossible to lie. She just turned her face.

“You shouldn’t shout at your wife like that,” Yabu said easily as he stood there, an elegant figure in front of an angry man and a hiding woman.

“Shut up!” Shohei snapped. He was beginning to look red-faced and Elena knew that he was about to erupt. She traced calming lines down Shohei’s back. “Listen here, whoever you are, stay the hell away from my wife. I don’t fucking care who you are, just stay away. You hear me? Stay away.” He gestured to Elena. “Let’s go.”

Elena turned to follow his fuming husband when Yabu’s hand found its way around her elbow again, pulling her until her back crashed on him.

His breath was hot in her ear when he whispered, “There’s nothing you can do to keep me from seeking you out, Elena, he said.

Then he let go. Elena rushed to join Shohei, unwilling to look back at the man who stood there, alone, watching her shuffle towards her husband.

“I’ll get you one way or another, Elena,” he said lowly, before turning away.

--

Yabu arrived at his mansion a few moments later, clearly pissed off at Elena’s husband.

He had planned on going straight to his room, have a glass of Scotch to calm his system and maybe shower before going to bed, but a shocking sight greeted him when he entered the living room.

His eight dorks of friends gathered there. It was common sight to see either Hikaru and Takaki inside his house, and also Inoo, but what really surprised him was that even his younger friends who were still students at school were there, too, on a school day.

“What are you guys doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be at school?” Yabu asked Yamada, Yuto, Yuri and Ryutaro.

“We skipped class,” Yamada said, almost too proudly as he stuffed the a spoonful of strawberry parfait in his mouth.

Yuto crossed his legs as he took a sip of his strawberry juice.

Chinen sat beside Yuto as he ate a cheesecake.

While Ryutaro didn’t seem to mind that Yabu was there and was gabbing non-stop on his phone.

Yabu was about to point out that skipping school is bad, and they didn’t have to look so normal about that and clearing his fridge free of pastries and dessert, but he didn’t have the energy to lecture them and act like the older brother that these dorks think that he was. Instead, he let out a huge sigh.

“I see,” Yabu sighed as he threw himself on the padded rocking chair in the corner. The boys looked at him with curious eyes. Nothing ever stopped him from lecturing them before.

“I saw her,” Yabu said under his breath. But his voice wasn’t soft enough to hinder the eight boys from hearing him and stiffening.

Takaki’s, Daiki’s and Hikaru’s eyes met. Holy shit!

---

Elena and Shohei were eating lunch inside one of the restaurants in the mall. Elena was still shaken up, but she acted like she had forgotten about the incident already.

But Shohei wasn’t planning on letting that go yet.

“So, who was that man?” Shohei asked acidly.

“I don’t know him,” Elena said as she focused her gaze on the crumpet she was buttering. She tried to keep her voice from stuttering. “He’s a rich-looking man. How would I know him?”

“That’s good, I thought you knew him” Shohei smiled.

Elena timidly smiled back.

---

“I’ve never seen him that down before,” Takaki said as he wheeled Ki through the gardens of Kota’s estate.

“Was he really that taken by that girl?” Kei asked wonderingly. “I’ve never heard him that sad, either. I’m now beginning to regret why I set him up with Mizusawa.”

Takaki was silent. Then he spoke. “Under normal circumstances I would have rooted for their loveteam. The problem is, she’s married. On top of that, she’s pregnant.”

Kei snapped his head up to Takaki’s direction. “She’s pregnant?”

“Yup,” Takaki said. “Five months, actually.”

“Five months?” Kei said worriedly. “That coincides with Kou-chan’s birthday!”

“Maybe Yabucchi got wind of the news? Maybe he thinks he is the baby’s father,” Takaki said.

Kei shook his head. “That’s not possible,” he breathed, trying to convince himself just that.
