Chapter Seven:

“Four months to go,” Nanami said as he met up with Elena. Elena smiled up at her.

“Yeah, four months to go,” she said.

“Elena, you don’t know how proud I am of you,” Nanami whispered to her best friend. She was really happy. She knew that Elena would be a wonderful mother, and Shohei would be an excellent father. The only thing she was a bit mad about was that the guy who did this to Elena wasn’t even aware that someone was carrying his child in her womb. Or even if he did, he didn’t care.

“Ah~ I wonder if he takes his medicine on time,” Nanami said as she used her straw to stir her iced tea. She was still worried about her ex-patient Inoo Kei.

“Who?” Elena asked, curious.

“My ex-patient. Inoo Kei, you know, the one who was blind and paralyzed?” Nanami said, not meeting her friend’s eyes. “The one who owned Inoo Medical and the Art and Music Gallery?”

Elena’s hand stilled as she picked on her salad. Her eyes were wide open as she heard Inoo Kei’s name.

---

“By the way, Inoo-chan, do you have any news about Sakuraba-san?” Takaki asked as he looked at the clear blue sky.

Kei sighed deeply and shook his head indicating that he doesn’t know.

“Maa~ I heard that she is Mizusawa’s friend,” Takaki said.

Upon hearing that, Kei spun his head towards Takaki’s direction.

“What??” Inoo said in surprise.

“Yeah,” Takaki said, a-matter-of-factly. “I heard that they’ve gone to the same high school and were best friends ever since.”
Kei blinked. “Takaki?”

“Hm?”

“Where do you get all these information?” the raven-haired guy said in wonderment. For someone so sweetly airheaded as Takaki, knowing all these information seemed pretty amazing.

Takaki grinned. “Lemme just say, I have my ways.”

---

Kota had his ways, too.

He knew that, for some reason, his friends were keeping him from meeting Elena. He didn’t understand, save for the fact that Elena was married and was pregnant. But he was sure that the child is his. He felt it. And he had to make an honest woman out of Elena.

But that bastard Shohei was in the way.

“Kota-kun,” a soft voice called from beside him.

He sighed and arranged his face in an expression that conveyed, at the very least, civility. But that was fairly hard to do. “Haru-chan.”

Haruna looked up at him, admiration and worship in her eyes. Yabu somehow felt bad for her. She had to know, one way or another, that he wouldn’t look at her the way she wanted him to look at her.

After all, he had tried so hard to forget Elena, and he had used her in the process, figuring out that someone as beautiful as Haruna would be able to make him forget. But he was wrong. Five months has passed, but his longing just grew.

---

It has been moments after Yabu Kota walked out of her life.

Haruna pursed her lips she loved Yabu, yes, but if he didn’t want her… well, she deserved better.

She quickly checked her face in her compact mirror and left his office.

---

Elena hated going to the hospital alone. But Shohei wasn’t able to make it to her prenatal check up today, and Nanami was still on-duty at Inoo Medical Hospital so she really had no choice but to go alone.

She sat in the waiting area and flipped listlessly through a magazine she found lying on the center table. There were a few women in the room, but none were as alone as she was.

She sighed as she ran a hand on her stomach.

One by one, the pregnant women came through the doctor’s clinic. She was starting to doze off when she felt someone sit beside her. She opened her eyes slightly to see Yabu sitting beside her.

“What are you doing here?” she asked.

“I’m here for you. It’s your first ultrasound, isn’t it?” Yabu said as his eyes dropped from her eyes to her swollen stomach. “Such special days, you’re not supposed to be alone.”

“I… I am not alone,” Elena denied. “Shohei would be here shortly, so… please. Please leave,” she said, trying to make it as convincing as possible so Yabu would leave.

“No,” he said. “This child is my flesh and blood. I want to be able to share the moment of seeing my child for the first time with you, Elena.”

“Yabu-san…”

“Don’t lie, please. I’ve had enough of lies,” Yabu said as he took one of her hands and raised her fingertips to his lips. “Elena, I know. I know that this child is mine. I want you to know that I will provide for this child, and I acknowledge it as my own.”

“Shohei-”

“He knows, too, doesn’t he?” Yabu said as he caressed her face with his gaze full of tenderness and gentleness that she remembered from the first night they spent together. “Elena - you don’t know how much I longed for you these past few months. You don’t know what I’ve gone through trying to forget you,” he breathed, and Elena felt his warm breath on his fingertips. It was calming and… familiar. It felt like home.

“But I wasn’t able to. Not once have I ever been able to forget you. So do you really think that, now that you’re so near, now that you’re carrying my child inside of you, do you really think I’ll let you go now?”

Elena felt the tears behind her eyelids. Those words, spoken with such love and care, were what she has longed for so long.

“I’m not going to leave you alone, Elena. Not now. Not ever. Nothing, no one, could ever stand in my way to loving you,” he said. Then the smiled. “And I’m going to begin now.”

When Yabu kissed her, it didn’t feel wrong or demanding or hopeless anymore. It just felt beautiful. It just felt like a first kiss should, way before everything happened.

“Mizusawa-san?”

Elena looked up abruptly. “H-Hai!”

“It’s your turn. Your husband can accompany you inside,” the doctor smiled kindly at both her and Yabu.

Elena was about to deny that Yabu was her husband when Yabu took her hand and gently pulled her to her feet. “Come on, love,” he said.

“Let’s take a look at our first kid, ne?”

Elena opened her mouth, then closed it again. Even though they weren’t married, even though they weren’t more than just strangers bound by the consequences of a one-night stand, his hand grasping her own felt so normal and good that she smiled and nodded. “Un!”

---

It was a boy. It was a little boy who was going to be showered by so much love and affection when he is born.

Elena looked at the screen, barely listening to the doctor. She didn’t need to know if the baby had complete fingers or what. Whatever he turns out as, he was going to be the most beautiful, perfect baby that the world ever saw.

And when she saw Yabu’s ecstatic, soft expression, she knew she wasn’t the only one who was thinking that.

---

“Let’s see to the nursery sometime?” he asked cheerfully as he assisted Elena into his car. He has offered to drive her home.

Elena spun her head to look intently at Yabu. Curiosity nagged at her.

“Well, I’m planning to consult my interior decorator to renovate one of my guest rooms to be a nursery for our little angel,” Yabu explained.

Elena looked at him intently, not wanting to talk.

Upon entering Yabu’s private sanctuary (it was Yabu’s room), she was amazed at the glamor Yabu had.

“Sugoi,” she said under her breath, as she looked around the room.

“Is it?” Yabu said gently as he hugged Elena from behind. “The guest room isn’t as large as this room, but it is fairly big, and I was thinking that the wallpapers need to be changed so that it would fit the nursery image, don’t you think?”

Elena sighed as he pulled out of Yabu’s embrace. “Yabu-kun, it’s… it’s going to be so complicated after this.”
“I love you.” Yabu said firmly as he palmed her cheeks. “I’m going to work this out, okay? Trust me.”

She was drowning in his dark brown gaze, and in a soft voice, it slipped. “I love you, too.”

“It’s nice to hear that,” Yabu said as he kissed Elena full on the mouth.

It was hot, it was heavy, it was torrid, and when Yabu’s tongue ran over his lower lip, asking for entrance, she gave it willingly, without another thought. And when she felt his tongue meshing with hers, she unconsciously let out a moan.

Yabu led her to the bed, and was busy stripping both their clothes, when Elena whispered softly, “Kou, the baby…”

He smiled and quickly changed their position, Elena now on top of him.

“I like the way you call, me, love,” Yabu said. “And don’t worry, in this position, we cannot hurt our baby, deshou? Just take your sweet time, love.”

Elena blushed and nodded her head consciously as she slowly began to move.
