Chapter One:
Spring in Tokyo has always been a bustle. Different types of people are milling about going about their own business: school-age kids running around with their brightly-colored bags behind their backs, teenagers roaming the streets with bright looks on their faces, and middle-aged people shuffling around with a purpose and a vengeance. But overall, the atmosphere was bright and new and fresh. Maybe because it was spring, but it almost felt like a new beginning.
A black limousine cruised through the roads of Tokyo, with eleven passengers sitting on the comfortable leather seats in the vehicle.
Kota and Elena Yabu were cuddling with each other in one corner, their eyes trained on the scenery found outside. Adjacent them sat YuyaTakaki, who was engrossed with texting someone on his phone. Inside the spacious limo, everybody had his own world, though being completely in synch with the others.
“Guys, is it just me or is the atmosphere in here really tense?” Yuto asked as he looked up from where he was coloring with Hiroki, Yabu and Elena’s son.
“It is tense,” Yamada observed after a few seconds. He looked up from the manga he was reading. “The three eldest guys in here are too wrapped up in their own world, I guess.”
“And it’s really weird to know that it’s only the two of us who took notice,” Yuto said as he went back to hiscoloring. “And people say I’m dense. Right, Hiro-chan?”
The two-year-old beamed at him. Yabu Hiroki inherited Yabu’s trademark eye-vanishing grin, and his mother’s deep dimples. He was also chubby, and looked positively angelic. Yuto grinned back at the child and ruffled his hair.
Keito was engrossed in reading his university books in one corner of the limousine. He was, like the rest of his cohort, on his final year of university, and he has gotten some time off school for the spring break, but that doesn’t mean he also has to have time off from studying.
“Hiro-chan! Don’t jump, you’ll hit your head,” Chinen scolded gently as he held the boy by the waist in support.
“Hiro wants to play with Gori-nii!”
It had been Hiroki’s habit to call his uncles by the suffix “nii” ever since Chinen complained that he looked too young to be an uncle (“Even Saaya’s kids don’t call me ojichan, and that’s because I’m so cute! I’m not allowing Hiroki to call me ojichan under any circumstances!”). But he never once called one of his uncles something soinformal as a nickname that a said uncle hated. So when Hiroki said that, Yuto and Yamada were silent for a bit until they laughed so hard it seemed to rock the limousine on its wheels.
Keito blinked at the kid, and suppressed the usual retort of ‘gorilla janai!’ because, seriously, can you get angry at a kid as cute as Hiro?
Keito extended his arms and smiled at the boy, but not before pushing his university books aside. “Well,” he said in his soft voice. “What does Hiro-chan want to play?”
---
“Ne, Keito,” the youngest uncle in the car, Chinen, asked as he pulled his earphones out of her ear. “How was England, anyway?”
“Good,” Keito said absentmindedly as he let the toddler on his lap play with his hands. “I’ve been a tour guide to one of the new transferees there and she’s just plain beautiful.”
“What’s her name?” Chinen asked as he leaned his head on Yamada’s shoulder.
“Adachi Rika.”
The other boys’ mouths formed exaggerated “o”s. Hiroki giggled at what his uncles did.
A cell phone beeped.
“Whose was that?” Yuto asked as he gathered the crayons from the car floor.
Daiki pulled out his phone. “That was mine,” he said. What he saw made his forehead knit in confusion. The text was from his dad. The text was ordering him to go home immediately.
Like, seriously, what the hell?Daiki thought as he pushed his phone back into his pocket. Then he shrugged. It was better if he did not question things. He looked at Yabu. “Guys, could you drop me off to the nearest bus stop to my house?”
“Eh? Why so sudden? I thought we were going to the riding club?” Yuto asked as he raised an eyebrow at Daiki.
“My Dad just mailed me. There seems to have something so important that we need to discuss.” Daiki said.
Yuto nodded as he reached over to page the driver to head back to the Ariokas’. “Well, parents do that often. Maybe they just miss their chibi son too much.”
“I’m not a chibi,” Daiki grimaced. Well, at least not compared to Yuto, who was two years younger than him yet was amazon-ishly tall compared to him.
“Yes, you are,” Yamada grinned. “Isn’t he, Hiro-chan?”
Hiroki looked up at Daiki and nodded. Dai-niiochibi!”
“See? Even the kid agrees with me!”
But Yamada wasn’t prepared for Hiro’s next statement. Hiro, laughing, pointed at Yamada and squealed: “Yamada-nii motto ochibi!”
Yuto blinked, then laughed. “Yama-chan, the kid’s too smart for your manipulating him.”
Yabu and Elena smiled at their son. “Hiro, kocchi?” Elena called. Hiro stood up from Chinen’s lap (he found Chinen’s lap the most comfortable place to sit in amongst his uncles) and carefully walked on unsteady feet towards his parents.
Takaki sighed as he peeked at Elena and Yabu. he saw how in love the two were. He saw how happy they were, connected and merged in one bright, happy package that was Hiro. This was what he wanted for himself. This… family. And he wanted to build this family with Haruna.
He sighed and looked out the window. It has been two years. It has been two years since the first time he fell for someone that hard. Two years since he’d promised himself that he’d make Haruna see that he was the man for her.
Two years have passed, but there was still no development in his promise to himself. Haruna was still with Shohei. And he was still there, waiting. Waiting like a stupid guy, because he knew, somewhere deep inside him, that what Haruna and Shohei had was something unshakeable and unbreakable and whatever Takaki was prepared to give, to sacrifice, it wouldn’t matter.
He knew, deep inside him, that he was fighting a losing battle. But he was also stupid enough to keep fighting.
The car screeched to a halt and Daiki bid his peers goodbye as he jumped out of the car. Hiro waved furiously. “Bye-bye, Dai-nii!”
Daiki laughed as he bent over to kiss the toddler on the forehead. “I’ll see you again, okay? Be a good, boy, Hiro-chan!”
---
Upon arriving at Yuto’s family’s riding club, Yabu took Takaki aside. Elena gave him a questioning look before proceeding to the lounge with the rest of the boys.
“Okay. ‘Fess up. What’s up, Takaki? You’ve been out of it since hours ago,” Yabu asked crossly.
“I’m sorry if you think so,” Takaki sighed. “I was thinking.”
“Thinking of Haruna again?” Yabu asked straightforwardly, his brows knitted together.
Takaki was speechless for a second. Then he nodded lifelessly.
“Takaki… I did warn you, didn’t I? but you didn’t listen to me.”Yabu sighed deeply as if was giving up on something.
Yes you did. It’s just me. It’s just my weakness, Takaki sighed. Then he murmured, “But I really love her, Koppi.”
“But she is not in love with you.” Yabu said harshly. There was no way around it. Besides, he was getting fed up with Takaki’s stubbornness.
“I know that, but I’ll still wait until she realizes that I am the one for her.”
Yabu sighed. He never knew that Takaki could be this obstinate. He just turned away. “Fine. But remember. I warned you so many times already.”
Then he pushed his hands in his jeans pockets. “Let’s head back. The others are waiting.”
Takaki sighed, too, as he followed the taller guy back into the club house. They were greeted by shouts of ”Hiro! Don’t run! You might hurt yourself!”
The toddler hurled himself onto his father’s legs. “Daddy!Hiro wants to ride a horse!”
Yabu smiled as he bent down to pick the toddler up. “You do? Do you want Yuto-nii to teach you how to ride?”
“Un!” His son nodded fiercely. “Yuto-nii teach Hirocchi ride pony!”
Yuto laughed as he went over to father and son. “Okay, Yuto-nii would teach Hiro-chan.”
Hikaru grinned as he approached Yuya. “I heard that Yuto’s parents stock good stuff in the basement cellar. Want to check it out?”
Yuya sighed. Then he smiled. “Why not?”
---
Yuto’s parents really do stock the good stuff. Yuya was good as drunk, despite having the highest alcohol tolerance among his friends. Hikaru, relatively weaker at alcohol compared to Yuya, was already sprawled on a lounge couch.
Yuya drained his glass. He didn’t need Yabu rubbing it in. he didn’t need Yabu telling him that Haruna meant trouble from the start. He didn’t need all that. Or maybe he did. But for TakakiYuya, mafia leader, there was almost no discrepancy between “want” and “need”. For him, “wanting” was the
same as “needing”.
He gazed through his glass. He needed release.
Nobody questioned him when he left the club house. He didn’t look drunk, anyway. He could still very much walk properly.
He found a relatively quiet place in the club. It was a secluded park, surrounded by foliage, and it was actually kind of hard to get into. He found a bench where he could sit on. There was a woman sitting on one of the ends of the bench, but he didn’t mind. She looked sad. He was sad, too, so they fit.
He plopped down on the bench and cried hard.
