It was two months after their group vacation in Yuto’s family’s riding club when he received the invitation.
His fingers played with the fine white envelope, still stunned as to what bad news the envelope held for him. It was an invitation, it was an invitation to Haruna and Shohei’s wedding.
Maybe he has been mulling about the pain too much, that he wasn’t aware of the tears that has begun flowing from his eyes down his face. They would probabaly have gone unnoticed if Takaki’s secretary hadn’t asked him if he was alright.
“I’m perfectly fine. Just… go bring me the reports form the Southern Japanese branch,” he said as he wiped his tears away briskly. His secretary scurried out of the office.
“It’s too late, huh,” he said as he fiddled with the edge of the envelope again. He sighed as he leaned back. “Too late to fight now…”

Sayuri never knew that a one-time thing would be this difficult.
Okay, so they didn’t just do it one time, but that was irrelevant. And she had to chalk the smell of garlic as one of her nausea-causing scents she comes across with. There was also the irritating matter of morning sickness, where every morning she throws up.
“Sayuri.”
Sayuri looked up from where she was wiping her mouth with her handkerchief. She has just rushed into the bathroom to throw up. She looked up straight into the eyes of her father. “Dad?” she croaked.
“I’ve been observing you since a few weeks ago. Tell me, are you pregnant?”
“I…” Sayuri said, then she decided it was not advisable to lie. “I haven’t taken a test yet, so…”
“Who is the father?” Mr. Iwata demanded.
“T-TakakiYuya,” she said, eyes swimming in tears.

Takaki was drinking. He has taken to drinking whenever something worries him - it has been his way to anchor himself to the ground when he feels as if he has been thrown in outer space without a safety line.
Ever since he came home from his office, he has the damned invitation on his mind. He couldn’t get it out of his mind. All the effort he has exerted, was exerting, and was planning to exert has gone to dust, because after the wedding in three weeks’ time, Haruna would be married and there was nothing he could ever do about it. He has sacrificed and worked for something that wouldn’t ever be repaid.
He knew that it would have happened someday, it’s just he wouldn’t accept it. Couldn’t accept it. His friends were right. Everybody was right. And what did it leave him? He was alone in this room, feeling sorry for himself.
His phone on the dresser rang, and he glared at the piece of technology, as if willing it to disappear. But after a few seconds, he sighed and reached over to take it.
“Yes, Takaki speaking,” he said, rubbing the bridge of his nose.
“Hey. It’s… me.”
“Who’s me?” Takaki asked, obviously pissed off at whoever owned the female voice for being so vague.
“Iwata Sayuri. You know, form the… you know.”
Takaki was instantly mollified. He breathed deeply. Why was she calling? And how did she know his phone number? “Oh. Hi. I’m sorry, I was… I was having a bad day. Is there… is there anything I could help you with, Iwata-chan?”
He figured that he garnered the familiar name-calling. They, after all, had sex in a park two months ago.
“I, uh…” her voice wavered. Then in a clearer voice, she said, “Can we meet up today?”
“Sure, I’m free,” he said as he glanced at the calendar on the wall. Which he planned to never do again, because it only reminded him of the impending marriage of Haruna and Shohei. “I’ll wait for you in front of my office building, I suppose? We can go grab lunch or something.”
“Great. I’m… looking forward to seeing you there.”
“Me too, I’ll…” Takaki said, but he was already talking to a dial tone.
He sighed and pushed himself off the floor. He proceeded to the bathroom and proceeded to take a bath and freshen up. The girl didn’t deserve his sloppiness, he figured.
---
Sayuri was nervous. She kept glancing around and fidgeting, and she looked down on her glass of iced tea with trepidation. She wasn’t sure if she was supposed to do this, but she was already here, so she figured she’ll just have to push through.
But she was scared. What if this man wasn’t the man she was thinking him as being? What if he really wasn’t the thoughtful man she thought he was?
What if… what if he was just another man like Hasshi?
Sayuri sighed. Calm down, she berated herself. It’ll be fine. Of course it will.
She hoped she convinced herself.
---
Takaki thought of many things that could be the reason why Sayuri called him. But it never prepared him to hear what Sayuri had to say.
Sayuri’s eyes were trained on her iced tea glass, and Takaki felt breathless until he reached over and drank his own glass of iced tea.
He didn’t know what won over: his elation at finally be getting a child, or his shock at getting some random girl pregnant. Yes.
It was moments before someone broke the silence.
“I… you don’t need to feel obligated to do anything, Takaki-kun,” Sayuri said. “I… I’m not here to force -”
“No. Really, I’m not thinking that. It’s just that… it’s just that it’s a shock.” Takaki said as he put down his glass. “I mean… I mean, how… when did you know?”
“My father took me to two different clinics for a test. Both came out positive,” Sayuri looked up, and she could clearly see the bewildered look on Takaki’s face. “I’m not going to force you to be responsible for the child. I’m just… I thought you should know.”
“No, Iwata-chan, it’s fine,” Takaki rubbed his face with his palms. Then he looked at Sayuri with a pointed expression. “I… I’m going to provide for the kid. I’m going to be its father. It’s just that…” Takaki sighed. “Could I… could I speak to your parents?”
Sayuri nodded. “Absolutely. Should I give you my home address? I’m still living with my parents, so…”
“No, uh, I’ll meet you at my office.” Takaki said. Then he tried to smile. “It’s fine. I’ll… It’s going to be fine.”
Sayuri smiled back, but it never reached her eyes.
---
For some unknown reason, Takaki found himself lounging around with Inoo after he met up with Sayuri.
“So, what’s the problem, bro?” Kei asked as he ate his blueberry cheesecake.
Takaki sighed and he looked pointedly out the window. “Remember what Chinen told you guys in the riding club two months ago?”
“Hmm, about you getting laid? Yeah, I do, what about it?” Kei looked curiously at his friend.
“I got the girl pregnant.”
“Whoa! Dude! I thought you told Chinen you used protection? How come you got the girl pregnant?”
“The condoms broke on us, man.” Takaki confessed. Kei clicked his tongue.
“So… who is she?” Kei asked.
“Iwata Sayuri.”
“Wow, damn. Her family’s rich. They were the ones who acquired Kojima Corporation,” Kei said with wide eyes.
“Her family did?” Takaki said dully. “Aw go. This is… I can’t believe I’m saying this. This is freakingly complicated.”
Kei put down his fork. “Hey. What is so complicated about it? You wanted a kid, Yabu said. What’s so different?”
“I told Yabu I wanted a family. And what the hell were the two of you doing talking about me behind my back?”
“Irrelevant,” Kei cocked an eyebrow in emphasis. “But seriously. There are single-parent families existing in this world, Yuyan. Look at Hikka’s family.”
“Look - single parent families are okay, but I wanted a typical, ordinary family, where there is a dad, a mom, and the children. Get me?”
Kei looked at Takaki expectantly, as if waiting for more information.
Takaki sighed. “Ugh, forget it. You wouldn’t understand.”
“Oh yes, I do. This means I get another godchild! Preferably a girl, Yuyan, so that it would be even.”
“If you’re so eager for kids, why don’t you make them yourself?” Yuya grimaced.
“Uh, no. I’m getting married for love, okay? I’m not getting into the sticky situations that you and Yabu find yourselves in. So in the meantime, I’ll just
content myself with your kids.”
Takaki sighed as he clasped at his head. “You’re giving me a headache.”
Kei blew him a kiss. “I was born to do that.” Then he turned back to his cheesecake. “It’s gonna be fine, Yuu. You’re stressing about it way too much.”
---
This meeting wasn’t the type of meeting that Yuya has envisioned when his bride-to-be met his parents.
Yes, he meant bride-to-be. After hours of thinking last night, it has finally dawned upon him that he wanted the ideal family. Maybe not so much as he
wanted Haruna for himself, but he definitely wanted to have the perfect family. He wanted to marry Sayuri because he wanted his kid to have that kind
of family, nothing more.
“I… I’m really not saying that he should provide for me,” Sayuri said. “But… we talked earlier, and he said that he wanted to. So, I was thinking of asking, what kind of provision would be most convenient for you?”
Takaki wanted to say exactly what he was planning, but his father beat him to it.
“Yuya.” It was the steely voice of his father that brought him back to earth. Yuya looked up to meet his father’s eyes and saw that this man he has been so afraid of when he was kid was looking at the girl who sat across them with her parents. “Yuya, you have to be responsible for your actions. You have to marry this girl and acknowledge the child as your own.”
“Father, I - ”
“Let us talk about the wedding. What would be the most convenient time?”
