Jake's mother found some website saying rent to live in London is close to 1000 pounds a month, can anyone confirm or deny this? I don't believe it but I don't have any concrete evidence against it.

I would be looking to rent a small single room.

£1000 a month (not inclusive) will get you a flat the size of romauld's in a similar area.

For a bedsit in zone 3, you'll be looking at about £80-90/week:

Basically, if you don't mind sharing a bathroom/kitchen and you don't want to live centrally, you can easily do it for £100/week plus bills, and probably cheaper. If you want your own place it becomes pricier, although a small studio flat in zone 3 or 4 should still be under £500/month. For a decent sized one double-bedroom flat in zone 2 you're looking at £800-900/month; add a second bedroom to that and you're at £1000/£1200 unless you go further out again. It all depends which bit of London you want to live in, really. Very south and very north are probably the cheapest options, but it varies massively from postcode to postcode; Balham is cheap and Wimbledon, one postcode along, is extremely posh.

I can find studio flats from 100 per week in Clapham on this website
http://www.ludlowthompson.com/renting/index.php
I know someone who has bought a 2 bed house in Lewisham (with a fair sized, but far off complete deposit) and their mortgage is 750 a month.

So, err, she's misinformed. But I think you're as capable of using the internet and finding out she's misinformed as the rest of us ;-)

Paf! You can get much, much cheaper than that, especially if you're willing to share a house, but even if you're going for a studio you can do better, even a one-bed flat, depending on the area.

Looking quickly at Loot.com, it doesn't look too much different from when I was there. One-bed flat, probably looking at at least £800 pcm, studio you could go down to £520 or thereabouts, room in shared house, you've got a fair chance of getting something for around £325. £400 if you want something a little nicer. Some of them even a bit cheaper than that. Some less than £300, though I don't entirely like the sort of areas in question. The rooms in shared houses are often inclusive of bills as well.

If you mean actually within London itself, then it is possible to rent a tiny bedsit for something around £150 per week ( ... )
