Is LJ just a Blog?
How connected do I need to get to just keep up with the fact that everyone I know is using this...?

For someone who has been reading SF/F since I COULD read, I'm hopelessly "behind the times" on the social networking / Blogsphere.

Help.

LiveJournal is a blog that facilitates community; the really handy thing is the “Friends” view, where you can see everything your friends are posting, interleaved by time. I see it as a modern extension of the old custom of letter-writing to let people know how you’re doing and what’s going on in your life, but without the pressing urgency of mail in your inbox. Unlike most weblogs, it has a threaded comment system that allows multiple conversations to branch off a single post, which helps sustain conversations, and it permits taking up a lot more space to talk about thing than Facebook or Twitter does. Twitter is great for tiny updates (I’m mithriltabby), but is hopeless for nuance.
