This past weekend, instead of watching the premiere of the new series of Merlin, I went to the Ren Faire. It seemed very appropriate that that's what I should be doing instead. A girl in my material cultures class last semester wrote a paper about the Ren Faire. And it really is sociologically very interesting. The thing I enjoyed most (besides the food--I love fair type food, from stalls) was the Falconry demonstration.
Apparently,
Cast in Bronze has been there in the past. Not this year, but that's okay. I saw it at the Longwood Congress, and really, once is enough for a lifetime.
I did, eventually (Tuesday night I think it was) find the time to actually watch Merlin. It seemed like it had gone backwards on a lot of progress they'd made in terms of characterization and not bludgeoning ideas over the head with a bucket of stupid-water (from the Camelot well). It felt a LOT like the first episode of the previous series. But hopefully they'll get back into the swing of things soon. I did accidentally see the whole-season trailer at the end of it, because I thought it was the trailer for next week. But I'll wait and see what happens.
I'd be very happy if something didn't happen either to Uther's characterization or to Uther himself this season that changes my relationship with him. It seems very likely that something will. In this episode, I actually thought it was the weird avaricious thing that didn't really fit--I hadn't really seen signs of that before, so I've decided maybe some other kingdom has made demands on his coffers. The new witch hunt I could kind of see, not so much the way they presented it, but as a reaction to the trauma of the finale of series 1. Hopefully he'll steer towards the more complex and interesting soon. That outfit, though, mmmm. It was really the best part of the whole episode. It was like a cross between Merlin and Repo!, and I liked it.
