I guess there's been wank going on all over LJ about fanfic and whether or not it's right, because of an author who...had rather strong views on the subject. But, nice sum-up, I gotta agree. :)
this is the first i have heard of such wank, can you give me more details? might be worth a laugh.
one more point for fanfiction; often times the series might not have the time or plot oppurtunity to really develop what otherwise might be a really interestic character. fanfiction bridges the gap somewhat. I know I wouldnt be so into inuyasha if not for fanfiction. I wouldve gone "god, i'm tired of only getting 5 minutes of new content every episode screw this" long ago.
An author Diana Gabaldon wrote a blog post about how she hated fanfiction and thought it was illegal, and compared it to raping her daughter. It...was epic. Here's someone who's archived the posts, since Gabaldon deleted them. I haven't had time to read the originals yet, but I've heard/read summaries.
woooowwww....raping your daughter....um. damn. *feels dirty* note to self, never read Diana Gabaldon, lest i sully her daughter with my sinfest eyes.
this is another reason the world needs fic recommendation guilds/sites/reviewer blogs. so that when authors get curious they dont have to wade through the piles of rapists to see the sweet compassionate babysitters. ...i want to hit myself for the awkwardness of that metaphor/sentance.
Oh my god, I love both of these. The bingo card is hilarious, and sad since that's all stuff I've heard of or seen before as arguments. The article by Cory Doctorow is amazing, just amazing. It's really refreshing to see a well-thought out argument in support of fanfiction from an author, instead of the silence of authors and the protestations of fans. (Although, to be fair, I'm sure there are a lot of authors who do speak out, like the ones listed above)
agreed, it is quite refreshing. I had totally forgotten about the hordes of lessthansanctioned published(!)fanfiction reguarding star wars and star trek. and if anyone tells me timothy zahn is an intelletual property rapist I may have to hurt something.
