J-Min? Who is she, and why is she on the same OST as my Sica and Krystal?

Jimin frowned to herself and minimized the window, already regretting her decision to read the comments on the article about the OST. All the comments contained either praise for the Jung sisters - praise that they deserved, of course - or confused people wondering who the hell J-Min was.

It wasn’t fair, honestly. She was an artist from SM Entertainment, so why didn’t she get attention? Why wasn’t she ever allowed to release Korean albums? Why did her company promote her so poorly? She still had nightmares about the time she opened for TVXQ when, throughout her entire performance, loud whispers asking about who she was filled the arena. Hell, she wasn’t even featured in I AM.

“Maybe I’m not as talented as that scout claimed I was years ago,” she muttered to herself, falling back into Japanese. Despite it not being her native language, it was the language she was most comfortable with lately, due to her Japanese activity. At least she was more easily recognized in Japan.

“What in the world are you talking about, Jiminnie?” a male voice asked.

“Wha-?” Jimin started, looking over her shoulder to see who entered the room. She quickly shut her mouth and stood to bow to the man approaching her. “Sungmin-sshi! Sorry, I was just thinking aloud. Did you need to use this room to practice?”

Sungmin chuckled and bowed back at Jimin, stopping her when she tried to return the bow yet again. “Jimin-ah, we’re label-mates. We’re working together for a musical now. We’re friends. There’s no need to be so formal with me.”

“Sorry,” she mumbled, bowing once again out of habit.

“Ahh, you’re doing it again,” Sungmin sighed, grabbing both of Jimin’s shoulders to keep her standing upright. “Jiminnie. Speak informally to me.”

“I- But- Y-yes, Sungmin-sshi,” Jimin stammered.

“Sungmin. Or Sungminnie. Or oppa, even,” Sungmin corrected. “Pick one.”

“Yes, Sungmin oppa,” Jimin said with a resigned sigh.

Sungmin grinned. “Good! Now, tell me what you were mumbling to yourself about,” he ordered, walking Jimin over to a chair and sitting her down on it. “It didn’t sound very nice, Jimin-ah.”

“It was nothing, oppa,” Jimin insisted, eyes downcast. “Like I said, I was just thinking aloud.”

“Well your thoughts are incorrect,” Sungmin sniffed. At Jimin’s started gasp, Sungmin chuckled softly. “Jimin-ah, I do know Japanese, you know,” he informed her before sighing dramatically. “Ah, no one ever remembers that.”

“I’m sorry, Sungmin oppa! It’s just, while I’m in Korea, I’m used to talking to myself in Japanese and not having to worry about people understanding what I’m saying. The first few times Sooyoung replied to my mumbling, I nearly had a heart attack,” Jimin said, mumbling embarrassedly as she revealed more to Sungmin than she had intended.

Of course she had to make herself look like an idiot in front of her sunbae. Of course.

Sungmin chuckled and reached out to ruffle Jimin’s hair. Jimin was rooted to the spot, frozen and unable to react to Sungmin’s friendly gesture. Sure, they were going to be in a musical together. Sure, they were signed under the same label, working for the same company. But they rarely interacted, and she was two years younger than he was. She wasn’t quite in the comfort zone with him that he seemed to be in with her.

“Listen, Jimin-ah,” Sungmin said, crouching so his eyes were level with Jimin’s. “You’re dumber than those netizens if you think that you aren’t talented.”

Jimin’s eyes widened. “H-how did you know that I was reading what they were saying?” she asked, knowing that there was no way Sungmin could have seen the screen before she closed it, not unless Sungmin was secretly a ninja.

Sungmin smiled wistfully. “I make the same expressions as you were making when I read negative feedback from them,” he answered honestly, never breaking eye contact with Jimin.

Jimin felt awkward, but Sungmin was staring into her eyes so earnestly that she started to relax.

“You say that like you still get negative feedback from them...” Jimin said, frowning. “Surely you don’t. Not anymore, right?”

Sungmin chuckled and shook his head. “Ah, Jimin-ah, I’m going to be very honest with you,” he said, making eye contact once more. “The backlash? It never ends. No matter how successful you become. No matter how many awards you win, no matter how many times you prove yourself. It never stops.”

Jimin’s shoulders sagged in defeat. How could she handle it?

“But,” Sungmin continued, straightening up into a standing position. “I’ll let you in on a little secret,” he said, extending a hand towards Jimin, offering it to her with a gentle smile.

Jimin took his hand. “What is it, oppa?”

“People that mind don’t matter, and people that matter don’t mind,” he said, giving her hand a gentle squeeze and pulling her to her feet. “You can lean on those that care about you, and then the weight of the critics’ words feel like next to nothing. So, feel free to lean on me whenever you need to.”

Sungmin gave her one last smile, and gave her hand one last squeeze. He bowed his head at her and retreated, leaving Jimin feeling hopeful, a light blush on her cheeks.
