Cribs

I used to wake up
and climb out of my crib
to wake my parents--
who spanked me and
put me back to bed.

Now, when I wake
and climb out of my crib,
I wake my cigarettes--
who spank me and
put me back to bed.

Everone needs to smoke--

to climb from the crib
and to crawl toward the nipple,

and to suck--

til kingdom come
or will be

Ah, the punishing comfort of cigarettes. Or, "coffin nails," as our British brethren say. Maybe we should share one soon...

Zach, You left out the part that you were wearing industrial pampers for these spankings. You would sneak out of bed routinely - by swinging your body and your legs over the crib like an acrobat with swift ease. You were plump at 18mos but smart and had the timing and technique down. Then you'd scamper across the hall in vinyl-clad feet --for you usually were dressed in your favorite blue flannel romper sleeper. When you got to the side of our waterbed-you would rest your fingertips and chin on the ledge of the bed and raise your eyebrows high and twinkle your eyes up at me and giggle in delight and say Hi! After the 6th attempt at putting you to bed and numerous Noah's Ark stories and "Making Melody in my Heart" type songs. We were at our wits end. We did spank your padded bottom and you would cry sometimes but mostly just take it in stride and lay down on your mattress with way to much energy for 11:30 at night. 10min later - It would start all over till you were sleepy. We did eventually figure out that caffeine and sugary pop don ( ... )

Do you have any good chamomile recommendations? Don't know about the straw though --pretty hard to look tough whilst drinking tea from a straw, but then again, tough is a lost cause for those encased in industrial pampers, a la the softer side of sears.
