For that shot aperature wouldn't have been what you were looking to adjust to get that dark foreground. Think of aperature as when you squint your eyes in order to make something sharper that you can't see, the wider the aperature, the more light you let in, the less of the picture comes in focus ( like this). So for this shot you can tell that you were using a smaller aperature not because of the light, but because everything from the hand rail of the stair case to table down stairs is in focus. A quick shutter speed is what would've darkened the foreground.
