You shouldn't have to, i mean its quite possible to pass school by learning the syllabus to the letter. But learning the extra bits gives you a broader knowledge base, and it may give you a glimpse of a area or field that becomes a lifelong passion.
I like finding out the niggly details because , well, its in my nature. I like to know how things work. Then again, this isnt always practical. Do you know how the gears in a car work? do you have to? Will it affect your life or usage of the device if you dont? Is there any way you could apply the knowledge if you had it, in a situation?
You never have to know all the details, providing all you want to do is get by. Then again, even that can be quite a bit when thinking of things such as safety.
As i said before, i'd feel hollow about a subject if i didnt know at least some details.
