Yangsze Choo’s The Ghost Bride is a fantasy novel set partly in the Chinese community of 1890s Malaysia, and partly in the Chinese otherworld of ghosts and demons. Yes, I thought the book made that pointy nicely and I thought it was really one of its strengths; it made me want more.

Originally I was going to include more in this review about the recent boom of historical fiction set in China in the US, and what it means that Taiwanese, Malaysian Chinese, etc stories are finding a place within that genre, but I cut it to focus more on this specific book.

I would love to hear what you think of the ending if you finish it, actually--I have a lot of complicated thoughts on the resolution of the romance plot that I can't discuss without spoiling.
