Hinata arrived early enough to get a nice table and to get herself a nice warm drink before she had to face Neji. Her chest was filled with regret and foreboding. It was painful to not even be aware of what she'd done to injure him. She remembered being angry, but only vaguely, and there were scabs on her right fist from where she'd punched something, as if left behind as solid, lasting evidence or a guilty memior. She'd gleened enough from his angry comments to guess at what she'd told him, but there was always a chance she'd said far more and far worse.

Her hands were warmed by the hot drink, and her tongue tingled as the taste buds were burnt. He would be here soon, unless she'd gotten into the habit of arriving places late. Hinata doubted it. Neji never seemed like a person who would ever forgo manners in any obvious way. He'd be rude, but he would be on time.

She wondered if Sasuke would be on time when he went to meet Neji. She wondered what their real relationship was. She wondered why she cared so much. He'd been completely nasty to her, but after getting over the initial shock of it, she had to wonder why he'd react so violently to her questions. Perhaps she was sticking her nose where it didn't belong but, a simple explanation of how they'd only met once, or were merely acquaintances would have sufficed. She wondered if Sasuke had tried to kiss Neji. She got the feeling Neji would not be the one to make the first move in that relationship.

If there was even a relationship. She was getting ahead of herself.

She finished her tea and ordered a second one. A small breeze came through the open door, so she pushed her hair behind her ears to make sure it wouldn't fly into her mouth. Hinata felt awkward waiting, and couldn't help but wonder if Neji would stand her up. She'd feel like such a fool.

But at least that way they could end it. Cut it off cleanly. It would mean he didn't want to see her, didn't want to speak to her, and that Sasuke was right and he didn't even like her. She could cold turkey her cousin then. Not hate him, of course, but maybe move past him.
