[D&D] Monster creation?

Sep 21, 2006 13:42

I'm going to start running some D&D pretty soon here, so I'm working on creating some new monsters. And holy cow, is this a non-trivial practice. I figure I'll get better with time, but just trying to make a "ratling" is a chore. I'd love to be able to input a set of parameters and have it spit out a monster. I'm working on modifying the kobold ( Read more... )

I'm hardly a D&D expert, but it seems to me you can check the write-up of the Warrior class to see what bonuses that grants you, and then just take those away. So for your ur-kobold, subtract 1 from BAB, 2 from Fort save, and I guess a few skill points. Hit dice are weird, because they're treating kobolds as a base race, like elves and dwarves, and races don't have HD until they choose a class. But I suppose you can say that if a kobold isn't anything else, then it must be a Commoner, which means d4.

Disease Resistance would be an extraordinary ability, I'd guess.

Oop! I just found this in the d20srd.org stuff (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/typesSubtypes.htm#humanoidType):
Humanoids with 1 Hit Die exchange the features of their humanoid Hit Die for the class features of a PC or NPC class. Humanoids of this sort are presented as 1st-level warriors, which means that they have average combat ability and poor saving throws.

Humanoids with more than 1 Hit Die are the only humanoids who make use of the features of the humanoid type.

So that's a particular hiccup I wasn't aware of. Also, why standardize types when you then apply an exception! Sigh.

Seriously, as in what? Don't be surprised at my inability to make new monsters. My desire to learn the arcane system of magic numbering is awful. I was hoping D20 had ironed out a lot of the guesswork that went into prior editions.

Holy Crap, DnD! Somewhere out in the world there's a 2 year program in DM.

We gotsta get our Dawn of War on. "Dark Crusade" ships out on October 9th. We get the Necrons and the Tau. Something about a persistant army in the single player setup as well.
