So it was just chargen and a test-run of the combat system, but it was a session of Actual Play. Three fighters and a cleric take down a band of goblins and zombies. ON A SHIP!
I read the thread, sounds like you had fun, and there was some seriously thought provoking stuff going on throughout.
As to the 13 encounters thing, it does seem like an awful lot, but that could be 13 encounters with two orcs (CR 1 together) or 13 individual gnolls (CR 1 each) or fewer bigger fights or whatever. I personally have played a monk up to 4th level by the end of three sessions, each lasting about four and a half, maybe five hours, the pacing seemed pretty resonable.
