That's YA for "Young Adult." I've got my Niece (13) and Nephew (16) staying with us and have piqued their interest in
Burning Wheel by, get this, describing the Duel of Wits. Both of them are all fired up to Rebut, Incite and Dismiss each other.
We're partway through burning a character for my niece. She decided (after we talked a bit about her favorite character from one of her favorite fiction series,
Varjak Paw) that her character had a falling out with her family as a servant to nobles, escaped to the city, and is now a guard. Her lifepaths are: Born Peasant, Servant, Pickpocket, City Guard.
We're already brimming with possibilities. Why did you abandon your family? Why did you abandon servitude? How do you reconcile your criminal past with your law-enforcing present? There are so many hooks into meaty story and we haven't reached beliefs yet.
Then this morning we're doing stats and she gets to Steel.
"My Steel is still at B3."
"Why's that?"
"Well, the choices I made balanced out."
"What were those?"
"She was enslaved, so Steel went down one. She bore a child, so it went back up one."
"Wait, she has a kid?"
"Yeah."
Holy moly, I wasn't expecting that. Pair it up with my nephew's thoughts on his character, "He hates weakness because his son died from being weak." There's a whole pot of awesome about to boil. I sorely hope we get some time to play while they're here.
