Shadow of Zelda?

Reading this article The Year's Ten Best Games in Japan, I found the following quote about Shadow of the Colossus :
I had a conversation with the director, Fumito Ueda, who told me that
his biggest inspiration was the original Legend of Zelda: "The colossi
aren't 'boss battles' -- they're inverted Zelda dungeons."

How so?

And yes, Japan really comes out with some awesome games.
