So, I decided recently - I think my next project will be to build an AR-15.  I dont know whether I'll get started on it this year or perhaps next year.  I think I've spent a shitload of cash already this year, so I dont know.  I think I could put a lower receiver together from a kit, but I'm a bit apprehensive about it.  The gun dealers around here ( Read more... )

Awesome.

You can avoid the shipping and FFL fee if you pick the lower receiver up at a gun show. I got my DPMS lower for $115 + the cost of admission, which is still cheaper.

I've read a lot of good stuff about Del-Ton, and would probably go through them if I did another build. My upper kit is from Model 1 Sales, and I have ZERO complaints about it. Well, I wish I would have gone with a flat-top upper, but that's about it.

Good luck with the build. Only pain in the ass is the detent for the forward takedown pin. Launched mine across the room a few times before finally getting it in.

The gay ass gun show we have in this state requires you not only to pay the cost of admission($7 for non-members) but also pay to join their stupid pro-gun organization before they'll let you buy guns from them ($37). Michigan had a much nicer show where you could just pay $5 and get in no problem. Ah well. Two questions: how much does .223 go for these days? Also, how big of a pain is it to clean the motherfucker after shooting?

I'm currently working on an AR. No reason for apprehension on putting together the lower, it's stupid easy. Seriously, all you do is line up the holes and tap in the pins. I didn't have roll pin punches, so I just used regular punches. I'd suggest putting masking tape over the lower in case the punch slips.

I'm using a Doublestar lower ($100), Doublestar lower parts kit ($50), and a MagPul CTR stock ($150 for the stock, buffer, buffer tube, and spring). If you get a regular M4 or fixed stock it'll come out cheaper.

I''m going to order my upper half from PK Firearms. They have a 16" DPMS barrelled upper for $430 with RRA bolt group.

Del-ton allows you to order everything BUT the stripped lower for $465 as a single kit, and they allow you to specify what customizations, etc, you want. Seems like a better deal than ordering the lower, the parts kit and buttstock, and then ordering the upper separately.

It just depends on what customizations you want. I looked at Del-ton and some other places, and PK Firearms happened to offer the closest to what I want at the lowest price.

Most prices come out fairly close. But it pays to shop around.

I agree with the better-deal part. The quality is not as huge an issue as some people think it is, especially with the LPK. Hell, I used the supposedly-abysmal Model 1 LPK on my AR and my trigger breaks far cleaner than the FN M16 I was issued in basic.

If you're going to be competing or dishing out thousands of dollars for tactical carbine courses or shooting hundreds upon hundreds of rounds every month, most of that shit doesn't matter, even chrome barrel/chamber lining.

Just match the gun to your needs. If you know you're just going to be firing cheap ammo through it at paper targets once or twice a month, no need to break the freakin' bank.
