Yup, we do think differently. :) FWIW, the 'cleansing' I referred to isn't about overpopulation. At least for me it isn't. There are times when I am appalled with humanity and human behavior, and I just want to grab it by its collective neck and shake some sense into it. I'll let the gods do that, though. As for reproduction, I've never wanted children and I cannot have them now, so my genes will die when I do. Whatever I leave behind for posterity I probably already have. It's just not important that I survive.
The Projo had a front page article today about bird flu and pandemic preparedness. It's nothing we don't already know, but maybe my family will be more likely to listen to me now that the paper says the same thing I did.
And as for that preparing, it needs to be done soon. It won't be long before other people realize the potential danger. We need to buy our supplies before they run out.
Yeah, 'cause you know how at midnight when it becomes the year 2000 all the nukes are gonna go off...
Every generation always has some kind of huge world-ending thing to worry about. And there are always nuts who fill their basements with bottled water, guns, and canned goods in case the boogeyman comes.
If there's going to be something huge that wipes us out we won't be able to stop it. But I don't think we'll see that in our lifetimes.
Complacency is what killed most of the victims of Katrina.
My personal views on any disaster preparedness: be ready, but don't worry yourself too much. Things are unlikely to escalate to a full on disaster, and on the off chance it does, you can be ready anyway. When you're careful and prepare for everything, you rarely have to worry about anything.
