I sent this message into the RIPagans Yahoo Group. Some of you will find it hilarious, and Anthony will likely roll his eyes. There are more than a few subtle stabs at people in it.Subject: Getting a good image

Ok as far as the view of pagans it seems that there are normal looking ones that give us just as much of a bad name, I'm not naming names here but you know who I mean.
And to make this statement fluffy pagans may not be as bad as hard core crazy pagans.
If I'm understanding you correctly, you're referring to people who give a bad name to pagans in general due to their attitudes rather than their dress or monikers.
An example might be some of the hard-core reconstructionists, such as the Asatru "If it's not Old Norse, it's CRAP!"
It's a good point, though the counter is that at least such hard core crazy pagans don't reinforce the usual stereotypical pagan images, as funny names and odd clothes do.
You have to actually get to know those hard core crazy pagans in order to find out how crazy they are - they don't damage pagans in general just by walking down the street and introducing themselves :)
Hmmm. I am of different minds about this. When it comes to college aged peoples I think in general you are expected to be mature enough not to walk around in robes and draw ridiculous amounts of attention to yourself. This is mainly because we are going into the world of perfessionals and have to follow a set of conventions. I'm not saying I always like the conventions but there they stand. And if you want respect, you have got to act respectful and not like someone who is trying to rebel just for the heck of it
( ... )
Basically, all we can do is try to put across a good image ourselves, and hope to lead by example. I just thought I'd take the time to bitch and moan about it. I find it therapeutic.
hey man... I read your info and you sound like a very cool person to talk to, I only know of 2 other pagans within a 10 miles radius of me and I dont really have any online friends that are. I live in the bible belt and I would like to add you to my friends list and stuff, if that is ok with you.

one thing though, the "normal" people who make pagans look bad, really aren't normal then, are they?
I mean, a certain ex-pagan group woman we all thought was normal wanted everyone strictly in khaki and white.
then again she was crazy.
you see?
:] See you tonight.
P.S. Crazy hardcore pagans need a slap sometimes, but fluffy pagans deserve a beating daily.
