KEYNOTE SPEAKER: TODD OLSON, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY OF ART AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY. DR. OLSON IS CURRENTLY WORKING ON A BOOK ENTITLED CARAVAGGIO’S PITIFUL RELICS: PAINTING HISTORY AFTER ICONOCLASM.
THE MEDIEVAL AND EARLY MODERN INSTITUTE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA INVITES PROPOSALS FOR INDIVIDUAL PAPERS FOR ITS GRADUATE COLLOQUIUM TAKING PLACE ON FEBRUARY 26-27, 2010 AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA, EDMONTON. ALTHOUGH WE WILL ACCEPT PAPERS ON ANY THEME RELATED TO THE MEDIEVAL OR EARLY MODERN PERIOD, WE ALSO ENCOURAGE PAPERS RELATED TO SOME OF THE THEMES OF THE CONFERENCE: MARTYRDOM, COMMUNITY, AND THE BODY. HOW WAS MARTYRDOM PERFORMED AND PORTRAYED IN THE MEDIEVAL AND EARLY MODERN PERIOD, AND WHAT WAS ITS PUBLIC IMPACT? HOW DID THE PUBLIC SPECTACLE OF TORTURE AND EXECUTION FUNCTION AS A MEANS OF RESISTANCE TO PRESIDING CLERICAL AND SECULAR POWERS? HOW DID BODILY SUFFERING ENABLE A PUBLIC EXPRESSION OF FAITH, AND HOW DID A SHARED SENSE OF PERSECUTION WORK TO BUILD SPIRITUAL COMMUNITY? HOW DO REPRESENTATIONS OF MARTYRDOM VARY ACROSS DIFFERENT RELIGIOUS COMMUNITIES AND TIME? WHAT ROLE DID MARTYRDOM PLAY IN BUILDING AND DIVIDING RELIGIOUS COMMUNITIES?
