Lots to update, so here goes.
Two weekends ago was our local annual science fiction convention. By sci-fi con standards, it's on the smaller side, maybe aroud 500ish folks, give or take. The official announcment for attendance was something like 576, and probably 1/3 of those were Saturday only day passes. It was a good time, I only went to two panels (costuming, of couse, on hats, post 1750 and the second panel was a spoken word panel by Luke Ski). Stopped in and watched the art auction for a bit on Sunday (the art show was the best one in about 5 to 7 years, and made me regret that we didn't have the disposable income this year to indulge in some art. There was this one print of a golden griffin/phonix hybrid that I really liked), bought two used books in the dealers room for $2 each (big spender!). We got to see some friends that we only get to see once a year, and I was very happy to get to see all of Luke Ski's performances. That was our other purchase for the week-end, buying a coupleof t-shirts and another CD from Luke, support your travelling artist. I think we have his entire collection of CD's right now. Good thing he's coming back next year, so we can add to the collection with any new releases.
The hospitality suite that we spent the most time in was called Bri-Axe Omega. It's the bar for a mining company, and is run by a couple of our friends. We like it because the people running it are very sensible and don't feel that decor for a hospitality suite has to be black, black, black. Their decorations had a very industrial feel to them, achieved with custom photo panels and white PVC piping. They also had a really cool home made bar. We ended up helping them out with their decorations by loaning them our radio controlled R2D2 unit (he's voice controlled, so reacts to the noise in the room) for Saturday and on Sunday we brought the remote controlled K-9 that I have. His remote was hidden behind the bar, so that he could be made to talk to people, without them seeing the remote in use. Around 1 am on Monday morning I decided to have some fun with all the drunks on the hospitality floor (since by then the crowds had cleared out a bit, though there were still alot of people around), and I took K-9 and the remote and took him for walkies. He got quite the reaction from folks, a few rubbed their eyes and stared as K-9 rolled down the hall and visited the various hospitality suites. There were also some squeals of delight from some as well, so I'm glad I took him for a walk. The best was when he rolled up to a fellow sitting in a chair, the fellow asks 'does he talk' and K-9 answered for himself, saying 'affirmative master'. Hee hee.
Unfortunately, two days after the con, himself came down with a bonafide case of the flu. Poor guy spent 4 days in bed, sleeping and coughing. And, before anyone asks, it was just an ordinary, run of the mill flu. He went to the Dr., who recommended cough syrup and bed rest.
Then it was my turn. Not the flu, but I had a massive back spasm on Saturday morning. Unfortunately it was just as we were leaving to head to Brandon (2 hour drive) to attend the memorial service for a friend. Fortunately we were leaving early enough that we could stop by the chiropractor so I could get an adjustment. Walking was awkward and very painful, but we made it to the memorial, it was important to us to get there. But between my sore back, and himself at the tail end of the flu, we weren't a healthy couple.
In order to let my back get some healing done, I stayed home from folkmoot yesterday, though himself elected to go and visit since there were some out of town folks had come to Winnipeg for a visit. I spent most of the day in bed, reading, and by last night my back felt a bit better. Though I have to say, I'm not liking the accompanying tummy ache that I'm getting from my tummy muscles trying to over compensate for the back's temporary weakness.
Today I'll be taking it easy again, other than another trip for chiro, I'm not planning on doing much of anything.
Not a very interesting update, but there you go. Not working, staying at home, dealing with bad back. ouch.
