Unrequited

A sweet little bit of fluff for John and Elizabeth on Valentine's Day.

Disclaimer:  Don't own, don't make money from my "borrowing" of these beloved characters.

Rating:  PG

Elizabeth stood on the balcony with John just as they had so many times before. Today though, she found it hard to enjoy the serenity of the world around them with John squirming like someone had just dropped an ice cube down his pants.

“Are you all right?” Her hand landed upon his chest, she could feel his heart racing under his thin black t-shirt. “John?”

He pulled a tiny white envelope from inside his pants pocket and slowly extended it to Elizabeth. She watched his face scrunch as if having second thoughts and she had to pry the envelope free from his fingertips. Her head tilted watching him twist uncomfortably before her. He had never seemed so endearing before. Tugging an even tinier card out of the miniature envelope her eyebrow arched in amusement. A valentine, just like the one she’d traded back in elementary school! It portrayed Charlie Brown hiding behind a tree peeking out at the Little Red Haired Girl. The caption read “Nothing takes the taste out of a peanut butter sandwich quite like unrequited love.”

Her heart seemed to painfully plummet through the floor before she felt it erratically start beating again. Slowly her heartbeat crept back up to a normal level and she let out a great gushing breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding. In and out, deep breaths Elizabeth. She couldn’t remember ever having such difficulty with these supposedly automated bodily functions. Those medical doctors had obviously never just been sucker punched in the heart by an irresistible and unbearably attractive John Sheppard.

He’d been studying the floor as she read; now his eyes peered up peeking through his eyelashes. Obviously uncomfortable with her silence, he said, “Let me see that card, I don’t think I gave you the right one.”

Elizabeth had already hit and surpassed her normal heart rate, it now galloped almost as fast as she’d felt John’s a moment earlier. Deep breath. “Really John? Because on this card peanut butter has been crossed out and the word turkey scribbled in above it.”

John slowly dragged his hand through his spiky hair, his lips pressed harshly together. Finally he shrugged, his hand fell to his hips.  “Well…guess it was the right one then. Happy Valentine’s Day Elizabeth.”

He had already turned to leave when Elizabeth found her voice again. “John?” His eyes were dark and guarded when he glanced over his shoulder.

She took a tiny step closer to him; her arm hovered over his right shoulder for the longest moment before she dared allow her fingertips to touch him. Her voice was clear and unwavering, “Not unrequited.”

A/N:  Hope you enjoyed, Happy Valentine's Day!
