Can't open Excel files by double-clicking them

I've had a problem with my work computer that when I double-clicked a spreadsheet file, Excel would launch, but the file would not load: just an empty instance of Excel would come up.

Here is how I fixed it:

From the “Office” menu in the upper left, click “Excel Options.” (It’s at the bottom of the menu, in a button.)

Click “Advanced.”

Resizing (restore down) the Excel window will also show you the file.

Not here, it doesn't. Excel just doesn't open the file... it's not that it doesn't draw it, it just doesn't open it.

Also, if that box isn't checked but you still have this issue, check it, apply it, uncheck it, and apply it. That should resolve the issue more permanently than the workaround I offered.

How did that box get checked in the first place? I know I never did it.
