*holds Sesshoumaru muse out to luxken27 at arms length* You can have him back now. Seriously. Please.

Title: Consanguinity
Word Count: 515
Rating: PG, because it's not possible to keep Inuyasha to a G rating
Disclaimer Post
Summary: Family. Can't live with them, can't get rid of them--even when you're handed the perfect opportunity.
Notes: This is the first fic to come out of the gifting meme I did waaaaaaay back in January. Gift fics don't hit the comms--not that I'm writing enough Inuyasha to have a comm to not post to anyway--so this is the only place you'll find it. And I'm gonna shut up now, because if I start apologizing for the probably seriously wonky characterization here, then I'll never stop. In my defense, it's been years since I was really into this fandom. Anyway.

Sesshoumaru walked alone. He hadn’t always been alone, he remembered, nor had he always been with…others. Not friends. He did not have friends, merely servants, enemies and others who had yet to be divided into their proper places. It was an important-even essential-distinction, though he couldn’t quite recall why that was so.

He blamed the warmth, and the rather unpleasant wetness that accompanied it. He had started moving to get away from the annoying sensations, but it seemed to have little effect, save to make them worse. Every movement seemed to send more of the disgusting stuff sliding down his body and soaking into his clothes. Why, even his left arm-

Wait, his left arm? Did he even have a left arm? Was he supposed to have one?

Sesshoumaru shook his head, dragging his hair through the largest wet spot on his back. Useless, ridiculous musings, unworthy of someone of his stature. No one tried to take from him and lived to tell of it. Of course he was whole; how could he be anything less? No, the only thing he need concern himself with was reaching the edge of the unwelcome warmth that plagued him and leaving it behind. Sesshoumaru took one determined step forward…and slipped in the wetness that had the audacity to pool about his feet while his attention was focused inward. Even worse, his body appeared to have taken leave of its senses and was now ignoring his commands. He was unable to right himself and the ground was rapidly growing closer.

“Sesshoumaru!”

Ah. Someone caught him. Good, then. It would have been terribly unseemly to fall face first into the dirt. And that voice…shouldn’t he recognize it? He let himself fall just a little more heavily against the person who caught him, the better to breathe in his almost-familiar scent.

“The hell-?”

The first thing to reach his nose was the overlying scent common to those who lived outdoors, and had for some time: the scent of earth from sleeping on the ground, wood smoke from a nightly fire and the green scent of growing things. Another breath brought with it the blood and dogscent smell of a dog demon, but it wasn’t until he caught the stench of mortality-of humanity-flowing through all the rest that he knew which dog demon held him.

“Now I remember,” Sesshoumaru breathed. “I hate you.”

His half-brother’s laugh was loud and bitter and more broken than Sesshoumaru would have deigned to notice, had he not been so off-kilter. “Yeah,” Inuyasha snarled, “I hate you, too. I hate you so much that I’m going to dump you with a healer instead of throwing your carcass off a cliff like I’ve been wanting to do for years now.” Inuyasha yanked Sesshoumaru close enough to him that he completely blotted out the rest of the world.

“You’re my fucking brother,” he hissed venomously, “and no one’s allowed to hate you more than I do.”

“Yes,” Sesshoumaru said faintly, as the warmth swallowed the last of his senses. “Yes, that’s how it is.”
