I've been gone for a while. It is something along the order of 9 years. I left in 1999 when I went to basic training. After two schools I went to Korea. From Korea I was stationed in Hawaii, German, Korea, and now Virginia 2008. Here in Virginia, people are acting...weird...Can you explain it for me ( Read more... )

It embarrasses Jim when people do that but I just thank them in return for being supportive. Most people, I think, saying thank you as in 'Thank you for serving our country'. It's their way of saying 'Well, I hate the war but not the soldiers so I thank the soldiers'.

I don't know more how to put it. I've see vets saying thank you and that really upsets me - vets from vietnam/korea, they got boo'd and harassed when they returned - they shouldn't be saying thank you, we should be saying thank you to them.

Somehow I don't think that the orders which are "being followed" are the same orders that people believe are being given. The political situation in the US seems to distort a lot of perspective on the actual situation that the American military finds itself in today.

I imagine it's the same way Bob Dylan feels when he goes to the Deli ( ... )

I don't personally do this, because I don't like being in people's personal space and vice versa if I don't know them well. This seems kinda invasive to me.

However, if I could wager a guess I would say it may be motivated at least in part by guilt. I mean, most people actually aren't doing a damn thing (yes, some of us do write our political leaders, vote, etc., but not everyone). There is the unspoken understanding that *I* (the person saying thank you) am in some way benefiting from what you do without giving anything in return. Out of my unwillingness to act, is borne a need to acknowledge what you are doing.

Does that make sense? Again, conjecture.

I have mixed feelings about it, but I don't discourage it. I can't say I have had tons of experience with this, but so far, I'd put the well wishers in these categories ( ... )
