People (and by that I mean fans) Are Crazy

I've just seen a little of it, but there are some people flipping their shit on behalf of the Ackles family because some paps at the airport got a picture of the baby. The main complaint seems to be that the Ackles have made a public statement saying they didn't want baby photos released.

That was the first I've ever heard of it, so I'm a little hesitant to believe someone without the title of Ackles' PR Agent when internet arguing with websites that have posted the pictures. Why haven't I heard of it? Because there obviously hasn't been a press release that reached news media outlets to the extent that I would hear about it. Only a small group of people from a very specific fandom seem to know this latest dictate. No, I don't follow Daneel on Twitter, but not everybody does. It's probably a safe bet that very few people are actually aware of this request, if it is in fact true, and most certainly not people in charge of entertainment websites.

Don't get me wrong. I don't care. I couldn't identify that, or any other, baby in a line-up even with the pictures on hand. All babies look alike to me. When it comes to celebrity kids as a whole, I can't recognize them unless they start showing up in movies and wearing name-tags (yes, that's you Rumer Willis, Will Smith's kid, and Melanie Griffith's child). But the utter vitriol spilling in the on-line comments toward "news" agencies as a whole was unsettling. Notice the quotation marks because we all know this isn't real news, but D-list celebrity news. It's a different animal.

I'm not going to debate the merits of freedom of the press vs. celebrity right to privacy, but it does seem as long as it was in a very public setting (an airport), she wasn't being hassled (they seemed to be at a fair distance past security), and the photographers did not in fact break into her hospital room to sneak a pic of the baby sleeping in the bassinet, then it's time to calm down.

If anything, after reading some of the inappropriate and disproportionately angry comments attached to the photo I saw, I think the Ackles should be more worried about the sanity of their supposed fans than a casual pap photo at an airport. In the business they are in, they should be relieved anyone outside their family has enough interest to want to take a picture. That's the hard reality of show business. If no one cares, then you don't exist.

No, one doesn't excuse the other, but it's a see-saw - and the see-saw has tilted well toward Crazy-Town in the past day.
