junjunshi asked me to repost her thoughts on the protests surrounding the Olympic torch relay protests over Tibet and other problems related to China.

Here is the link to her original post: http://junjunshi.livejournal.com/1223.htmlPersonally, I think it's interesting to get the perspective of someone from China. I am not really in a position to agree or ( Read more... )

I wonder what the Chinese think of America's control over Puerto Rico. There are Puerto Rican freedom movements, and even Puerto Rican terrorists, calling for a free Puerto Rico, while the bulk of the populace maintains a feeling of pride about their nationality but benefits too much from US protection to really want to be separate and free. One big difference is that we let Puerto Rico vote to go free, become a state, or stay a protectorate, and every year they pick protectorate. Another is that we have a free media, so if we were killing Puerto Ricans, everybody would know. China may truly be doing great things in Tibet, but because they aren't open or democratic, nobody knows for sure, so it is easy to disbelieve.

but I do have to agree the news coverage here is heavily tilted in favor of the protesters.

Yeah, it's funny how people take the side of the oppressed instead of the dictatorship.

Hehe, well, I actually meant as opposed to the opinions of the Chinese people. Sandra's was actually the first pro-Chinese opinion that I'd heard in regards to Tibet, which made me think that the other side (while, granted, probably "filtered" through government officials) was not being told here.

Fair enough.

Again, I don't think anyone has a problem with the Chinese people, in this regard. I think they have a problem with their oppressive government. And that's what people are protesting with these Olympic protesters.

(And a problem with our *own* government's schizophrenic reactions to their government, but that's a whole 'nother story.)

I think what t1tdave said is reasonable. Chinese government's biggest mistake was they drove all the western reporters and journalists out of Tibet back in year 1949 . So there is no way for the western countries to know what was the real tibet going on since then. China was tighly closed the door to the outside world under the leadership of chairman Mao and it happened to be the cold war area that most western countries were against communism countries, so the media towards tibet surely describe it as a miserable world. And this impression of Tibet was deep inside of the mind of western people till now. And that is why lots of americans believe chinese government really killed millions of ordinary tibetans ( ... )
