Yesterday I had the delightful surprise of discovering some actual career-related ambition. I've been following it up this morning, looking for computational linguistics jobs. I always just assumed you can't get a linguistics job without MA and PhD degrees, but that looks like not the case at all ( Read more... )

I applaud your use of the term "structurally unemployed". I heard somewhere that Microsoft, Inc. was the largest employer of linguists worldwide at the moment, which I find vaguely disturbing (cf. Chomsky's essays on control of the public mind). I guess there's always Motorola cell phone gizmos too, if you enjoy diphone synthesis...

As for me, I'll have a sandwich. Pass the jelly, please.
