There is no reason we shouldn't be treating our senior citizens this nicely.
Except they get in front of me in line at the drug store and argue for half an hour about why they can't use an expired coupon, ugh god. But yeah, I know what you're sayin'. Someday, we'll all be old. It's the one inevitability, right?
Re: Roots: Kind of know what you mean, sort of. I think certain members of my family have been chronically disappointed that I never got into the whole Zionism thing--which is funny, because there are very few blood ties to Israel in my family.
I would love to visit the actual countries that my grandparents come from--Hungary, Ireland, some tiny spot in the Carpathian mountains--but I guess that's not the same thing as being expected to "KISS YOUR MOTHERLAND. KIIIIIISS HEEEEEER!" I'm Canadian, full stop.
part of me feels strangely guilty for saying I'm an American full stop, especially since because I have rarely felt a real sense of belonging here. I'm always at least background aware that I look different from the majority of people around me, and that's been something that's sort of been there all my life because people react to me differently because of it. But I don't really belong HERE either, because while I look like I fit in, I open my mouth and suddenly it's STARES.
I don't actually feel -bad- about the lack of rootness, really. If anything I feel kinda relieved. I know what I was "missing", and I know that I wasn't really missing anything, if that makes any kind of sense.
I don't remember him doing so, but everyone here says that Obama once said that he envied the Korean subway system and wanted something like that for the US. Holy shit I believe it, it is mad efficient here.
