Last Airbender trailers

I don't want to beat a dead horse with a stick. I'm probably the only one left who still feels this way about The Last Airbender, but watching the new trailers just makes me not want to see it even more. I hate to judge a movie before I see for myself. I've probably read too many articles on Native American misrepresentation, that's why I get ( Read more... )

Yeah, it definitely got the hollywood treatment with the effects and costumes, but they extended it to the casting too. Unless you're explicitly a certain ethnic group with the appropriate stereotype attached, then your actor is white. I have no problem with white people at all, it just angers me when its blatant prejudice slapping me in the face

I'm a bit surprised that New Moon actually had real Native Americans. That was pretty cool.

I doubt that was difficult.

I'll disclaim this by saying I've never read/seen the inspiration for Last Airbender the film, and only ever heard vague discussion on the race!fail of the film.

But from what you've said, it's way the hell worse than I thought. It's one terrible thing to cast a show that's meant to have an Asian cast entirely with white people. It's worse that they're casting the "good guys" as white, and the "villains" as asian. Ugh.

Well, a lot of people argue that "just because it's inspired by Asian culture, doesn't mean it's supposed to be Asian people." I have to argue that the creators deliberately avoided having blonde or light brown hair on the show, for the expressed purpose of keeping with this theme. But it's a cartoon, so who can really tell.

It's definitely worse to make only the main characters white and everyone else who isn't important, Asian. If they're going to borrow so much of our culture, at least have some respect.

It's sad that everything you've said is true. D:

I honestly don't understand why they couldn't cast Asian/Inuit actors for the characters. I mean, how many states/provinces have China Towns in them? That should indicate that there is a large community of Asians within North America for the production to draw from, not to mention the fact that Greenland is, like, 90% Inuit.

Even more aggravating? They even altered some of the symbols for the different elements. I've been told that they might've altered the Water Tribe one so much because it had looked "too pagan".

-.- Why Hollywood? Why?

IKR?! There's billions of Asians on earth. I think that's the majority of the world population. It's not that hard to pick from. It doesn't really give them any credit when the casting call asked specifically for Caucasians. WTF.

Oh geezzz....what the hell does pagan look like. And so what? Are they catering to a Christian audience now? If they are, why are they deliberately acting so un-Christian-like by expressing so much bias?

Hollywood, I enjoy some of your films, but you can suck it.

I think they are trying to cater to a Christian audience, actually. Look at the clip showing the tattoo on Aang's back, and you'll see it's not-so-subtly made into the shape of a cross. -.- As for the pagan thing . . .

Compare this with the symbol on Hakoda's armour, I'm pretty sure there's something else that's similar to the Water Tribe's national symbol, but I can;t seem to find it right now.

I don't think I'll ever understand Hollywood. Or, well, the majority of the world, actually. Dx
