Day 13: Favourite female character in a book

This is a really difficult one because there are so many! I obviously have a great deal of love for Hermione Granger, as well as all the girls in the Tomorrow series, because they were such a formative part of my growing up, but I decided on...

Sabriel

I don't think I've ever read about a more courageous female character. She shows such amazing fortitude of character, despite huge amounts of grief, struggle and loneliness that come her way. She faces down the dead on a regular basis and sacrifices herself for the greater good. She lives with this constant threat of doom creeping down her neck, and yet is able to give her whole passion and strength to the things she cares about. A brilliant character and a brilliant book.

"Death and what came after death was no great mystery to Sabriel. She just wished it was."

Day 14: Favourite older female character

Miss Marple

Caveat: I mean specifically the Miss Marple inhabited by Geraldine McEwan, who is absolute genius. I love a good detective, and particularly one with a twinkle in their eye, and that is definitely the case with Miss Marple. She is extremely self-assured, intelligent and caring. I only hope I can be halfway as astute in my older years.

"Would you mind strangling me, Elspeth?" - Miss Marple
"Not at all, Jane." - Mrs. Elspeth McGillicuddy
