Back in action

Well I'm no longer sicky-poo, WOOT! And since I'm feeling better I've begun to grind out more drawings, here's my latest batch;

While I am still working on other 80's drawings, I'm just having too much of a blasty blast drawing the G.I. Joes of my childhood, so here are a few more, as always I've included pictures of the figures that each drawing was based on...

Roadblock

Roadblock was the heavy gunner of the Joes as well as their chef. And for some annoying reason he always spoke in rhyme. Honestly I never much liked the character in the cartoons or the comics, but i thought the toy was bad-ass. I mean he came with a giant freaking machine gun! Giant gun = awesomesauce! Also for those of you that don't get the "Body Massage" reference, here's where its from;

Moving on...

The G.I. Joe movie was anything but good. In fact it was downright terrible. Even as a kid I thought it was terrible mainly due to its introduction of Cobra-La. Cobra-La was a race of reptilian and bug people who ruled the world before the ice-age. They were extremely advanced and had a symbiotic relationship with nature. Everything they used, their clothes, tools, weapons, all of it was bio-organic. So on comes the ice-age, and the entire civilization retreats underground leaving mankind to die out.  Fast forward to present day (or rather present day circa 1986) and Cobra-La emerges from their long hibernation to find that the hideous ape-babies that they left to die in the cold had somehow taken over the earth, and now outnumbered Cobra-La a million to one. So they hatch a plan to raise an army. Enter Cobra Commander. They take one of their snake-people, make him think he's human and send him out into the world to amass an army for them capable of taking back their kingdom. Well Cobra Commander is some what of a bumbling idiot and effs things up. So Golobulus (the Leader of the Cobra-La) implants the idea in Dr. Mindbender's head to create a supreme being using the DNA of some of the world's most ruthless and powerful leaders. Enter Serpentor. So now Serpentor has taken control of Cobra, and eventually is led to the Antarctic to meet his masters. Of course the Joes follow and a massive battle ensues, and of course they win and no one dies except the monsters that make up Cobra-La. All in all, terrible movie that really effed up the G.I. Joe continuity. BUT, what I didn't realize as a child, and have recently found out while looking up reference material for the following drawings, is just how much the Cobra-La story borrows from H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness" The story follows a geologist on an expedition in the Himalayan mountains where he stumbles across the ancient ruins of a long lost civilization. The "Elder Things" as Lovecraft calls them, are described as beings that are neither plant nor animal but somehow both. While the movie did suck and the idea just didn't really work for G.I. Joe, I have a new found appreciation for the concept now. But anyway enough of my ramblings, on with the drawings...

Golobulus

What little boy doesn't love monster toys? Again the movie may have sucked a fat nut, but the toys were several kinds of kick-ass! Half-snake, half man, green monster arm, weird bug / crustacean eye-patch thingie. This was a really fun toy.

Royal Guard

This guy was my favorite out of the cobra-la toys, he was like a weird ant-man with an impossibly huge sword. Fun stuff!

Nemesis Enforcer

This guy was both bizarre and awesome. He had bat-wings, bone-like blades sticking out of his forearms and came with a green tentacle monster that you could attach to the backs of your Joe's.

And because I haven't been drawing just G.I. Joe's this entire time, here's a piece from one of the greatest films of the 80's;

This drawing was kind of a bitch. I tried a lot of new stuff on it and kept fucking up. While I am happy with the final result, it was a pain getting there.

And just for fun;

I'm now ready for the impending Zombie apocalypse. =O) This one was a lot of fun because it was a simple sketch on a piece of scrap paper while I was chatting at work about zombie flicks with one of my friends. The pencils were sloppy and barely there. I then quickly outlined the basic shape of the drawing and scanned it. More than 90% of this piece was done right in the computer, which is rare for me. But I may start doing it more often considering how fun this was to make.

As always please let me know what you guys think, I love getting feedback, it gives me a reason to keep working. =O) Thanks in advance.

Fatty out!
