CHARACTER NAME: Lua Klein
FANDOM: Baccano!
CHRONOLOGY: 1931 After the Pussyfoot incident and being separated from Ladd
CLASS: This is sort of a gray area. Lua is so passive she wouldn't actively involve herself in either side. She's gentle and caring so really not villain material however she keeps company with mass murdering psychopaths and she doesn't have a problem with that. Is neutral an acceptable class? Good aligned with bad.
SUPERHERO NAME: White Skirt (idk either)
ALTER EGO: Lua Klein ; she doesn’t have a job, her place is in the kitchen and cleaning. So housewife minus the "wife" part.
BACKGROUND:
*see Ladd Russo.
no, seriously. it's the same.
PERSONALITY:
The main thing about Lua is that she’s the opposite of everything Ladd is: quiet, gentle, soft-spoken, passive. This allows her to act as a counter balance to his overwhelming personality and, wither consciously or not, keep him in check. As such it’s incredibly difficult to discuss her without relating back to him at this point in canon.
Throughout the course of the show she is barely seen interacting with anyone other than Ladd, at least not in any meaningful way. When she is forced to interact with other people she’s polite and respectful, In Uncle Russo’s office she remembered her manners and addressed him with a due level of respect. "It's very nice to meet you, Mister." But when left to her own she's much more comfortable just keeping to herself. After all there isn't much point in forming bonds when her purpose is to be killed.
Being incredibly passive, she isn't shown to care too much about anything and the few suggestions she does offer are always phrased as a "why not--?" statement. So for the most part she'll just let things happen. The only time she ever tried to affect an outcome was when there was too much to lose, like when she climbed on top of the train to attempt to save Ladd. Which is also the only time she has ever disobeyed anything she was told to do. That was 'go back down and hide.' This shows that she does have her mind and she is afraid to attempt to take things into her own hands when it's really really important that does so.
However she did not resist in slightest when Claire tied the rope around her neck. It was clear that didn't like it and that she didn't want to die like that but she still let it happen. So she does have a willingness to die for Ladd not only by him.
Given that she does take noticeable pleasure in Ladd's constant death threats, as if it's another way to say "I love you" and (supposedly) her hobby is putting together blank puzzles which Ladd will break against her wishes but that's okay, she likes that he does that. She has to be some kind of masochist which helps their relationship work. However she does know the difference between hurting out of love and hurting for any other reason.
The only thing the manga adds is clearly showing that she isn’t afraid to let Ladd know what she thinks of him. In a scene not in the anime she implies the she doesn't approve of how he handled that scene with his uncle and then plainly called him horrible, but by the way she said it she also seemed to like that about him. When he responded with "You really hate me that much, Lua?" She just smiled, looked to the side and blushed. This just shows that her self-esteem is not so low that she would be with just any guy (who promised to kill her) but that, despite him being horrible, it has to be this guy.
POWER:
She has no power or anything resembling a skill in canon unless you count how she manages to be with Ladd and not get killed.
And so because of her general uselessness in pretty much anything super hero/villains do and the little value she seems to place on her life I think healing powers would be good for her. Only they work at the expense of her of her own life so she'd basically be giving her life to someone else. Obviously they wouldn't work on herself.
[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE:
Preferably more than a paragraph in length } Lua doesn’t talk for paragraphs, she barley talks for sentences. Her “unique voice” is being minimal. :x and this sample is only appropriate because Ladd decided to tell everyone already so no acting "normal" this time around.
-Video-
[ the video shows a women in a white dress, it kind of looks like a wedding dress. she's standing a foot from the camera. she just stares at it with those green eyes. her expression remains unreadable. she leans forward and readjusts it. it has to be straight. then she takes a couple steps back. ]
. . .
[ this is her first time on camera, is it obvious? finally she gives a shy wave and starts in her usual soft voice. there is a hint of an old world accent, it's just the way people talked in the 1930s. ]
I'm Lua Klein. … Ladd's [ word. need a word. ] fiancee.
[ just going to look at the floor now. why does she have to do this? ]
He- ...He's going to kill me someday. [ her cheeks start to flush ] But it's okay. This is what we want.
[ now she's smiling as she looks at the device again. ] Don't worry.
LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:
New York. It was a big city like was used to living in but it wasn't Chicago.
Visiting a strange new place with crowds of different people wasn't exactly Lua's idea of fun. That would be a quiet evening at home with her puzzle or maybe a book. Even though she sat with her puzzle now, all the little pieces scattered on the table before her, it wasn't doing much to help. As much as pushed the pieces around they never seemed to fit into their proper shape. She stared down at the pieces, her cheek lightly resting against her palm.
The edges separated out from the rest without much thought.
She might have been able to recognize a few buildings if she'd bothered to pay attention the last time she was here. And therefor feel a little less out of place but back then she had more important things to worry about than cityscapes and skylines.
At least the sides were starting to line up right.
It probably didn't even matter. There was too much unbelievable about this place. Like this power she now had. It's strange. Her death was supposed to be carefully planed and only to be followed through with at the most perfect (and romantic) time. Now she was gifted with an alternative method. No, here wasn't any way she could use it... except maybe for Ladd. Dying in place of the man she loved, instead of by his hand as they'd always planned, that might be nice. If she was allowed to...
Another piece found its place in the top right.
At least she wasn't alone. Ladd was here. They were together again. That's all that really mattered. The familiar sights and sounds of the city she grew up in wouldn't be missed wherever she could be with Ladd, that was home.
Suddenly this didn't seem so difficult.
FINAL NOTES ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER:
I don't like to play her as being out right suicidal, I see it more as a way for her to express her love at this point. She probably was suicidal at one point but by now she has moved past it.
Also journal name is in German because all English variants were taken I have headcanon that Lua's at least half German because Klein is a German name meaning "little" and my statistics show that there is a very high chance 4:5 that one of her parents would have been an immigrant. Which wouldn't have made life easy especially around WWI.
