Sep 19,1939 NAVY IS HARD HIT
A German sub has attacked and sunk the British aircraft carrier Courageous; the death toll is currently unknown, and the Admiralty is not revealing how close to its 48-plane capacity it was at the time of its sinking. This is a significant blow to the British Navy, as they have only six aircraft carriers total. Winston Churchill is mentioned for the first time that I've caught, as he is currently First Lord of the Admiralty; he is expected to address Parliament on Wednesday and express his sympathy with the families of the missing, as multiple ships of several nationalities assisted in rescuing crewmen and assembling reliable lists of the living and the dead will take some time.

Sep 19,1939 OFFICERS IN PARLEY
German and Soviet armies have met at Brest-Litovsk in Poland, and officers are working out the details of the division of Poland. The Germans have announced that "the Polish campaign approaches its end." Fighting continues around Warsaw, but the result is a foregone conclusion at this point.

Sep 19,1939 JAPAN WARNS U. S. ON NAVAL POLICY
Japanese press claims that the U.S. is taking over the British role of "far-East watchdog" and warns that this could lead to Japanese-American friction. Japanese naval spending is increasing, seemingly in an effort to match American naval forces.

The Soviets are being very cagey as to what their intentions are now that they've invaded Poland; they are alternating between saying nothing and saying so many contradictory things that none of the things they say can be trusted. All wait anxiously, especially the countries in eastern Europe, which understandably hesitate to throw their lot in with Britain and France as it appears that Poland's result from doing so -- in spite of the British and French "guarantee" -- was to become a battleground.

This is due to the blackout; outside, life all but ceases at nightfall. Rationing is accepted as a matter of course, as Germans have generally become used to life without luxuries.

Sep 19,1939 Incidents in European Conflict
Luxembourg is instituting a volunteer defense force of 125 men. Hitler is expected in Danzig the next day. A movie audience in Nicaragua was so angered by a war bulletin announcing the invasion of Poland by Russia that they stormed out of the theater and marched to the German embassy, where they proceeded to chant "Death to Hitler!" and "Long live Poland!" A British air-raid siren went off mistakenly thanks to a "technical defect;" the all clear was sounded two minutes later, but hundreds of people had been woken up. Parisians were informed that the first German soldiers captured on the Western Front were carrying pamphlets dropped by British planes over Germany. Swedish priests are encouraging guests at weddings to throw rose petals instead of rice, as rice is an important food item. Parisians who had evacuated and were now returning have been criticized by their government; just because bombardment has not happened yet, doesn't mean it won't. A submarine of unknown origin was spotted off the Costa Rican coast, 192 miles northwest of the Panama Canal. 28 men were arrested in Hungary for gossiping about the war.

Sep 19,1939 REUNION IN POLAND
An interesting reflection on the significance of Brest-Litovsk; it was here that the treaty was signed that removed Russia from WWI, and the author of this article points to the severity of that treaty in its consequences for Russia and contrasts it with the complaints Germany has levied against the Allies for the Treaty of Versailles.
