I have distanced myself from politics for the most part. However I still watch the occasional tv and I get news bits here and there in blogs and news sites. So my opinion is that he's doing just okay. Things could be a lot better or a lot worse.

As I am not American, my opinion probably does not really reflect the true sense of the feeling. However, I do have a couple thoughts on the matter.

1. I feel that the Premier of Ontario is similar - he doesn't do much that is good but is somehow able to stay out of too much bad press. Probably because the media loves him.

2. From what I have seen he has not done too much - except continue NCLB (which, by the way, is ruining the curriculum in Saskatchewan, Ontario, New Zealand and Australia with what is being adopted), and his controversial appointment of that Latina woman into a judicial position. Therefore, there is not much material to work with.

3. Mr. Bush took a hard line with everything and worked quickly to put policies in place. Policies that have been quite controversial. It was easy to pick at him, I guess.

...that you mention NCLB. I work for a state-level office of superintendent, and I think NCLB is - and will be - the bane of public education.

Well, NCLB, and the related standards, high-stakes testing, and Annual Yearly Progress that all promote accountability for funding as opposed to how well the actual kids are progressing.

Add to that all this achievement gap nonsense that seems to be all the rage, and a healthy fear of China and India, and we are poised to plunge the public school system into the dark ages.
