Thanks for the lovely long comment, I do have more head canon for this world but am unlikely to actually write it. Too many other things waiting to be written... I do agree with you that Pike/Kirk is a wonderful and sadly underserved pairing. I do have something in mind for that pairing for what I suspect will be the heartbreak canon of the next movie. We'll have to wait and see.

I'm delighted that you enjoyed it. Communication is indeed very usefu but not that easy, I wanted to write something where Jim and Bones had to find a way through despite being terrible at communicating.

Oh, my! This was hot but mostly it was so riveting from the emotions and the almost brutal way they all tore at each other. I was indignant for Kirk when Leonard first walked in. Wanted to argue with Pike, remind him that he'd be dead and Earth would be gone if Spock had been left in charge. But, I get his points.

And then the very perceptive way he reads Leonard, his words echoing Leonard's own. Ouch!

I adore the daddy-issues byplay between Kirk and Pike. I think it's the thing that makes that pairing so compelling.

Loved this, bb!

I'm really glad you liked it, it doesn't feel as if anyone else did. I hope it's clear that Pike's behaviour at the start is heavily influenced by the toxins and associated problems he is trying to hide. Maybe he should have apologised to Jim at the end... oh well, too late. I was trying to get actions to work in place of words in the fic.

Oh, no! Don't get me wrong. Once I realized what was happening to Pike, what had been done to him, I understood. It's just that you caught the intensity at the beginning so well! Throughout the whole fic, really.

And I know what you mean about feeling unappreciated. The ST fandom's just so quiet right now.

Okay, I should be working at the moment, but I wanted to take a quick break, so I'm back to your glorious fics. And, oh my, this is indeed glorious. I absolutely love the contrast between the "under the influence" Pike (who is still enough himself to be humiliated at his own condition and willing to fight through it alone, but otherwise clearly impaired and not to blame) and the toxin-free Pike, whose keen insights into these two men and his fierce desire to do the right thing by them are breathtakingly rendered. I actually got a bit teary at the end, imagining Pike stroking Leonard's hair; the affection there and the relief that these two finally get it, that what might've been a disaster in this bed has been turned into a new chance for each of these younger men to get what he needs... it's just beautiful ( ... )

Oh, thank you so much for the wonderfully long comment (which I particularly enjoyed, as this story got so little love that I was a bit disheartened by it). I really enjoy the challenge of trying to write complex characters - good people behaving badly for reasons, and/or battling to live up to their potential, and I don't find it easy to do. So to hear that so much of what I hoped to convey in this fic came across to you as a reader is enormously encouraging!
