Experiment HS873A - Do hamsters react when they are exposed to photographs of other hamsters?
As soon as he saw him, O-chan knew that the hamster in front of him wasn’t a real one. He didn’t move, not even breathe, and he was extremely slim when you looked at him from the sides. But above all, he didn’t smell like a hamster (in fact he was certain that he smelled like paper). But he looked kind of sad too, and O-chan didn’t really care where he napped as long as he was comfortable… so he decided to take a nap beside the new hamster and keep him company. Perhaps later, he would bring some sunflower’s seeds to share with him too.
Subject of the experiment number 1, from now on we’ll call him SE1, showed an active and immediate interest in the photograph. After inspecting it from all angles and smelling it a few times, SE1 fell asleep beside it, showing a remarkable friendly behavior and proving that the photograph didn’t make him feel uncomfortable in any way.

“Huh? What is this?”
N-chan looked at the photograph he had found leaning against the plastic blocks, near the exercise wheel.
“A photograph of a hamster? I wonder who is dropping trash in our cage…”
Completely uninterested in the photograph, he resumed his way toward the water bottle. Ten minutes later, when he passed again through the same place, the previous photograph had been replaced by a new one.
“Huh? O-chan?”
He hastily approached the new photograph and inspected it with great interest.
“Hum… He looks good in this one… so cute”
N-chan brushed his little nose against the photograph and smelled it.
“But it’s a shame that it doesn’t smell like O-chan at all. Anyway, there are some seeds that need to be eaten and a free exercise wheel that is begging to be used”
After smelling it one more time, he left towards his nest… Five seconds later he came back and took the photograph with him.
SE2 showed no reaction in front of the photograph of the unknown hamster. Nevertheless, SE2’s conduct changed drastically when the photograph was from a hamster he is used to interact with. Note: observed strange behavior that could be the base of future research.

“That was a very bad hair day, wasn’t it my friend?”
J-chan observed the hamster in the photograph with pity. Probably he hadn’t had his hair brushed in few days, the poor thing. He continued his way to the exercise wheel (a bit of exercise everyday is fundamental for keeping a healthy body) and was surprised to found four new photographs leaning against the plastic blocks.
“Isn’t that O-chan? And N-chan… A-chan and S-chan too… What are these things doing here?”
He looked at the photographs for a few more seconds and then resumed his way.
Suddenly he noticed that there was yet another photograph waiting for him in the last block. This time, the hamster that appeared in the photo has no other than himself.
J-chan got close to the photograph and observed it with critical eyes. Finally he wrinkled his nose slightly disappointed.
“I have told them thousand times that my best profile is the right one, not left.”
He squinted at the photograph in front of him.
“Does my gorgeous nose look too big in this shot?
He looked at it from right to left.
“No, it looks perfect as always, though it would have been better if they had used a bit more lighting and…”
SE3 showed little interest in the photographs of other hamsters (it doesn’t seem to matter if he knows them or not). On the other hand, SE3 showed a great interest in his own photograph, proving that he is able to recognize himself and…
“What are you doing A-chan?”
“Huh? Hello S-chan! I was doing a little experiment.”
“Ah! One of your crazy experiments again?” S-chan looked with curiosity at the photographs behind A-chan. “Are those photographs of us? Ha ha ha! You look really funny in this one, as if you were high in seeds or something. Where did you get them?”
“Here and there… Where are you going now?”
“I was thinking in doing some exercise in the wheel. Why do you ask?
“Oh, nothing. I was just curious. See you later, S-chan!”
“Bye!”
