German

I was born in Germany in 1990. My parents weren't military, and they weren't on vacation when my mom suddenly went into labor. No, my dad is bona fide German and he somehow sweet talked my mom into moving from New York to Germany with him to have me! We moved from Berlin to NYC when I was young, but we vacationed back home frequently. It was a ( Read more... )

I’ve visited parts of Germany and have always liked it, but I’m terrible at speaking German though. 😕

Where have you been? The countryside is gorgeous and that's what I'm most looking forward to seeing right now. The language is hard! Once you know it, you'll never struggle to describe anything because there's a word for everything!😄

I love Berlin, I've been a few times and it's amazing! The nightlife is incredible, even if I'm a little too old for it now. I love hearing you speak in German!

Do you have to be in bed by 9? I'm not too far behind. My late nights are running at half speed or less!

Thank you! Maybe one day I can use German more for work.

I need you to teach me the most awkward way to ask for the loo. No reason in particular, I only think it would be the funniest to mess up horribly when visiting.

I'm not sure about awkward, but try

Ich muss die kinder zum pool bringen. Wo ist ein badezimmer?

It is always a good idea to know how to ask for a bathroom when traveling abroad!

I love how well you speak German. I can speak shitastic Spanish, which allows me to keep my Puerto Rican cred but I keep trying to improve it every day with Ana. We speak to River in both languages so hopefully he will be fluent in both.

Thank you! I grew up speaking it, and that definitely helps. Did your parents stick to English? River's got it easy, being young and in that absorption stage of life. Keep practicing and your shitastic Spanish will become pretty good Spanish! It's leagues better than mine!

They were living in Puerto Rico at the time I was born, then we continued to travel around which didn't allow me to learn much Spanish until I was a teen living in Latin America. At least I can actually have a conversation with Ana's parents and extended family so that's a plus!

Do you read Spanish? I find that to be much easier than speaking it! Not that I'm good at that either, but I can grasp the main concept of a paragraph! To really get the hang of it, you should have Ana stop speaking English to you. You'll pick it up real quick!

That is so cool that you can speak another language! My first language is not English and I still struggle with it at times. I never looked like the rest of the kids, no matter where I lived, so I can relate to that feeling of being an outsider.

What is your first language? I don't think it's possible to speak English perfectly. There are always exceptions to rules and spellings. It's a very loosy goosy language!

The stares were the worst. I would ask my dad don't they have tv & magazines here? Are they sheltered?

I'm French! You're right about it being a loosy goosy language. I still make mistakes but it's gotten better over the years of practicing!

I agree, it's pretty sad.

Oooooh I love French! I lived in Paris and refused to speak English, even in times when I didn't know how to get my point across. We can't get better unless we practice!
