THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX. Melodrama and scene chewing, but oh the Costumes and Sets

Feb 03, 2013 18:21

So I am cleaning out my DVD collection not just anime.  I purchased ELIZABETH AND ESSEX because it was part of the Errol Flynn collection.
The technicolor filming  combined with breathtaking costumes and sets makes for a feast for the eyes.  To bad the rest of the film doesn't hold up.  I think I could have dealt with the over the top dialog performed in the most melodramatic style possible, if only, the music wasn't so obstreperous .  It really overwhelms  and interrupts the story.  Of course watching all these very American and Tasmanian actors performing a story about an English Queen and Nobleman and not one hint of English accent,  odd very odd.   2 Stars

Update: Based on the recommendation of a film historian that I respect (Jim Beaver) I tried watching it again.  This time even the breathtaking costumes and sets could not make me sit through it twice.  The music was just to loud, it may be a great theatrical score, but it is just too loud and intrusive for me and i like and watch old movies.  I guess it is all a matter of taste.
