The Promise (This Chapter: PG)

Sunlight streamed in gently through the window and landed softly on Miyavi's face, warming him. He lay with his eyes closed, tucked under the white cotton blanket, his arms folded across his chest; waiting.
The past few days, his condition had gotten worse. He'd fainted twice (luckily he was at home) and hit his head one of those times. He was still refusing treatment, but admitted himself to the hospital anyway. He could sense that his end was near and he didn't want the landlady to find his decomposing body in his apartment. He was just being practical...
He opened his cellphone and dialed the number; it was time to take care of the most awkward situation of his life. He could put it off no longer; wait longer and it would be too late.
"Moshi-moshi?" The other man picked up immediately.
"It's me. I'm in the hospital-"
"What happened?! Are you okay?!"
"Yes, yes, I'm fine. I need to talk to you, though. Get over here right away, it's urgent."
"Sure man, I'll be right there."
Miyavi heard the familiar silence of an ended call and shut the phone slowly, setting on the bedside table.
He closed his eyes and waited. Lately, all he did was wait for one thing or another.
-----
He had closed his eyes, but he didn't go to sleep. He heard the footsteps outside his door and sighed. Here we go...
The nurse opened the door and spoke in that soft, gentle voice that all nurses have: "Miyavi-san, there's a visitor for you."
Miyavi sighed and slowly sat up in bed, leaning back against the headboard: "I know, I called him here."
The nurse nodded and stepped aside to let the visitor in, before leaving and shutting the door behind her. The worry on the other man's face was indescribable.
"Hiroto..." Miyavi sighed out the man's name.
"Oh my God! Miyavi! Are you okay?!" Hiroto moved to sit in the nearby chair, "Have you been eating?! God, you look so skinny." He fretted.
"I've always been skinny." Miyavi stated.
"Well, that's true but-" Hiroto cut off the sentence, "The nurse... she said that you're gonna...... Is that true, Miyavi?"
Miyavi knew that Hiroto was hoping it was all fluke, an accident. That surely the softspoken nurse had just gotten Miyavi mixed up with some other terminal case. Surely she didn't mean his friend and mentor, Miyavi. She couldn't have. This was all a bad dream, right?
"It's true."
Hiroto blinked in shock. "But... How?"
Miyavi sighed, "I've had it for some number of months now. At first they said they could fix it, but it's been stronger than they anticipated. It's slowly spread to my heart and now there's nothing they can do."
Hiroto just nodded, trying to digest the information, not knowing what to say. "What- Why did you call me here?"
Miyavi sighed, "I want you to look after Yozora for me."
"Yozora? Why?"
"She relies on me very much, Hiroto, more than people realize. I don't know how she'll react once I'm gone, but I believe she'll be downright devastated. I can't die in peace without knowing that there's someone by her side to help her through it."
"But- What am I supposed to do?!" Hiroto felt like panicking.
"Just be there." Miyavi said plainly.
Hiroto looked down at his hands and thought. It's not like he could say "no"...
"Hiroto, you like Yozora anyway, don't you?" Miyavi was smirking now.
Hiroto snapped his head up to look at the older man.
"No. I. do. not! "
Miyavi choked back a laugh, as Hiroto retracted the lie he just said:
"Well, I mean... maybe a little."
Miyavi laughed out loud. "I knew it! But," his tone was serious again, "that really isn't why I picked you. I picked you because you're one of my best friends and I know that you're man enough to handle the job. Do you think you can handle it? Don't lie."
Hiroto thought for a second and then nodded.
"Well, okay then." Miyavi reached over onto the bedside table and handed him two letters. "One of these is for you and the other is for Yozora. Don't give her that letter until I'm gone, okay?"
Hiroto nodded again. He seriously felt like crying. This was really the end huh?
Miyavi patted his shoulder, "I have faith in you."
It was the gayest thing, but Hiroto couldn't help it. He leaned up to hug the older man. Miyavi had truely lost weight and seemed almost frail in his arms. After a bit, Hiroto pulled away and put his jacket on.
"Goodbye, Miyavi." He just about couldn't form the words.
"See you, Hiroto-kun."
Hiroto nodded and walked out the door quickly. The closer he got to the exit doors the faster his pace became. Before he knew it, he was running out to his car; unlocking it quickly and sitting inside.
This can't be happening to me right now...
He decided to open his letter, since Miyavi didn't say he had to wait.
Hiroto-kun:
I am sorry to have laid this burden upon you, but I hope you'll understand.
Throughout my life there are been a small group of people whom I care deeply about. Currenly that's my family, PS Company, and Yozora.
I have always been there for Yozora, helping her through difficulties... Although she doesn't realize, I've found comfort in her presence as well. I care deeply about her and therefore cannot die peacefully until I know that she will have someone around to look after her.
I know that PS Company will continue to thrive without me. My family will look after each other, I know. But Yozora... she will be alone without me.
I know that you have a romantic interest in her as well, and if you want to date her then please do so. Just realize that I love her too and if you hurt her I will strike you down. Haha~
In addition, I have always thought of you as a sort of younger brother. I trust your judgement.
Well, so long then. I know we'll all be reunited someday. From wherever I am, I'll always been looking after you.
With love,
Miyavi
Hiroto couldn't help but smile as a tear ran down his cheek. He wiped his face and walked back into the hospital, sitting on the bench outside of Miyavi's room. He poured over things in his mind, thinking about his new obligation, the friend he was losing, and he girl he was now being attached to. It gave him a headache...
At 11:30 PM, the softspoken nurse finally spoke to him.
"Ogata Hiroto, right? You were here earlier..."
"Right."
"Are you a friend of Miyavi-san's?"
"Yes..."
"Oh, well... I'm so sorry sorry to tell you this, but... Miyavi-san. He's dead."
Hiroto was solemn. "When?"
"Just a few minutes ago... I... thought you would want to know."
"Yes thank you..."
The nurse nodded and walked away. Hiroto couldn't belive it, but yet he knew it was true. Someone had to tell Yozora now, and he assumed he was that person even if he didn't want to be.
Miyavi... I think you have more faith in me than I do...
He picked up the phone... and dialed her number.
Here we go...
