Reason #153,205,431 why I find people frustrating (public post)

So Nathan, one of the guys that lives in the same block of appartments to me, left two lights on all day today. This irritates me, because I know he's on a pretty reasonable salary, so he just doesn't care.

Over the past week I've been a whole lot more aware of the effect I have on the planet. Things like high-power-consumption lights... heating the ( Read more... )

A decent backpack will take care of the shopping, so long as there's not a huge amount, or anything too bulky. It's what I used to do.
And sometimes a bag from each handle.

Actually transporting things isn't so much a problem for me - I've got pannier bags from when I was touring - so much as at Lutwyche Centro I haven't seen anywhere where you're allowed to chain a bike. There are a couple of rails inside the carpark that I've been tempted to use though... I don't know how pissed off people would get over that.

Aaah.
Back when I rode, the shopping centre had heaps of bike racks. You'll have to ask centre management. I'd have thought there'd be something in the carpark or wherever. Could always chain it to a pole out on the street. :D

I get paranoid leaving my bike out on the street - it's got too many quick-release things that people can just walk off with. The only way to fix that is either a five-minute wrestling match with the security chain or pulling the front wheel off (which isn't really a problem, mind you)... I'm tempted to just chain it to the rails inside the carpark - I'd certainly hope they'd give me a warning before coming around and cutting the security chain...

It's two lightbulbs. You gotta pick your battles ... if you leave a computer running all day, that's 300 Watts right there.

I realize it's only two lightbulbs, but the problem I have with it is that there's no reason for it. Sure, a computer uses more but at least usually if someone leaves it on, it's because it's being periodically used (and these are both 100W globes, so it's not that much less.)

You're right though, computers are a huge power suck. The standby feature is an easy fix for that though :)

There's no way we're ever going to be 100% sure that global warming's being caused by us... but having said that, certainly from what I've been reading (which I'll admit is biased) it's pretty much undisputed - certainly there's no theories to prove it isn't, and when you look at temperatures in comparison to human industry, there's no question that something's happened in the past 30 years, and it seems pretty odd that the temperature would stay relatively constant for so many years and then suddenly start shooting skyward.

And I'm sure the earth will backfire a long time before its truly in danger... but it could be a pretty unpleasant place for us a long way short of that.

Actually, I probably should have mentioned this - one of the lights has a floodlight with a motion detector on it, which isn't connected anymore.

(speaking of which, if you leave the light on 24/7 something like that would be a good idea :) They're quite cheap and it'd certainly pay for itself in a situation like that.)
