Reluctant involvement (public post)

So Your Rights at Work is doing an online petition protesting the industrial relations laws that were brought in this time last year. Normally I wouldn't bother with online petitions but when it comes to the IR laws I really feel obligated to participate, and if they get over 7,000 signatures the ACTU President Sharan Burrow will fly to Sydney to ( Read more... )

I often tell Americans, if you didn't vote, you have no right to complain.
People won't vote for who they want to because they think the one vote won't make a difference. What makes no difference is when everyone thinks that way. Or that old favourite, better the devil you know.
I'm a strong believer in not only the right to vote, but our duty to do so. And I won't just vote liberal because they'll win anyhow.
It's like using less electricity. Individually we won't change the world, but together we can. And refusing to do anything because you're just one person is plain wrong.

I couldn't agree more. I fail to see the point in complaining, unless you're doing it in a way that makes a difference.

I'm at the stage now where if voting was made non-compulsory, I'd still vote at every chance I got anyway. These IR laws are a perfect example of what happens when the vast majority don't make themselves heard. The government walked right over us, and almost no one spoke out... myself included. Luckily, burnt fingers learn best.

"And I won't just vote liberal because they'll win anyhow."

That shits me when people do that. It's a completely idiotic attitude - we know they'll win although we don't agree with them winning, but we'll support them so they win by more... but at least we'll win.

Huh?

*chuckles* However my money's on Liberal going down this election. Howard's pissed off too many people. I just checked that petition and they're up to 19,000 signatures in two and a half days. I'd like to think that others are waking up after this crap and reaching similar conclusions.

And good riddance to him. Git.
