I gave the NSPCC a fiver once. They sent me so much spam trying to get more money out of me I'm sure it cost them most of my fiver. But you can phone them up and say 'NO PAPER SPAM' and then they stop wasting your money and just start emailing you instead.

So far I have been saddest about the Children of Chernobyl in this respect, as whilst nearly all the charities have emailed me to 'say thanks (and would you like to donate every month)' and several have written me a letter, they sent me an entire unsolicited glossy 2011 calendar of children-not-dying-of-radiation-sickness which must have cost a useful % of a fiver to make and send. I am hoping that they are using up leftovers from some kind of christmas campaign and so the marginal cost of sending me a leftover in April was very low...
